Dan Spiegel: Panthers Playing With Fire Regarding Markstrom

Nice blog, Dan. As a Lightning fan/blogger I always appreciate reading your perspective on hockey in the state of Florida. If Markstrom can stay healthy and turn into the NHL goaltender we all think he can be, as a Lightning fan, I'm pretty damn terrified.

Obviously we all hope for the best with this guy but you would hate to think that he turns into a Jonas Gustavsson at the NHL level. Keeping him in the AHL to develop for a little while longer is probably the best thing for him, regardless of what he feels. Look at Cory Schneider in Vancouver as a perfect example; he thought he was ready to play in the NHL long before the Canucks ever brought him up.

This is all about asset management and, up until now, Tallon has been pretty good at it. I love the interest the Panthers and Lightning are getting around the league right now. It's great for the sport down here.

Great blog, Dan!

I have a feeling he's gonna need to get used to not being around Ellerby anyway.

Both very good goalies, and each was probably the best player for their respective teams when they met in the AHL playoffs.

Are you going to give a list of stats to try to back that up like Burn did?

Sorry, but most scouts and GM's would disagree.

Lack's size and athleticism give him the edge over Scrivens. Stats in the minors can be a little misleading as to who is going to be better and what not.

I actually do my own research, thanks very much. I've been following the goalie prospect rankings very closely for a number of years.

Stats don't hold as much sway as you think in a goalie comparison. Every single prospect site has Lack many spots ahead of Scrivens in goaltender rankings. But you can go ahead and base your entire argument on stats if you'd like.

haha hockeyfutures is your idea of facts? Sorry I know that because he's a leaf a prospect he must be poop but would it not be fair to say the goalie with the better numbers who took his team to the calder cup finals is not better?

How'd lack and the wolves do in the playoffs?

If that's the case then Tokarski must be the second coming of Jesus! Thankfully I'm not blind enough to think that's the case....

Scrivens will probably turn out to be a good goalie, like Tokarski, like Lack. However, at this point, Lack is the best out of the three because of a great many things.

I guess when a decent run in the ahl playoffs is the best you can do for the past 10 and next 10 yrs you have to be blind to get some sleep at night. Keep fighting the good fight little fella.

Quite sure this site is making more off ad impressions than Season Tickets. Considering Season Ticket holders don't view ads, they aren't making impressions.

Nice try though

Firstly, I have no hate for the Leafs at all, being from Kitchener and having 99% of my family being Leafs fans. So you can drop the jilted Leafs fan act, thinking my opinion is only based off of some kind of baseless hate-on for TO.

Secondly, I actually really like Scrivens, and think he will be a good NHL goalie eventually, but Lack is unquestionably better, at this point. I base that on not only scouting reports I've read on each, but also from watching each play. Lack has very few flaws in his game.

Lack almost single handedly kept his team in it against the S.A. Rampage and the only goalie in the AHL who is better than him, Markstrom.

So you claim that just because a team gets further, that automatically makes their goalie better Sorry bud.

So are you going to claim Scrivens is better than Markstrom too, because he has better numbers and got further. Sign of a superficial hockey fan.

Hockeysfuture is the worst prospect site there is...yet even they have Lack ranked higher. I prefer Goalie Guild and Hockey Prospectus. Not to mention guys like Lebrun, Ferraro, Belfour, and Young have stated that Lack is not only NHL ready, but also close to being and NHL starter.

He is only 22, and is widely considered to be the best goaltender in the world not in the NHL.

______________

I beg to differ. Though Markstrom is certainly in the top 5.

I think you are overanalyzing and complicating things.

He is a RFA and he is not going to go anywhere, nor will teams make a qualifying offer for him.

I still think he could be trade bait, though.

But, who knows if Clemmer will re-sign. It's possible that the Panthers want Markstrom to also earn his position, not leave the chair clean and unseated.

As for Ellerby. There are a lot of close friends in the NHL, but business is business. Messier did not go AWOL when Gretzky was traded.

I think Markstrom should get another full year. I am sure he will get called up due to an injury at some point. But, the opportunity for him to outplay Clemmensen, or whoever else is signed, is there. It's up to him to earn it.

We'll see in training camp and pre-season.
