Unreal.

It really drives home the point, to me, as someone who really picked up hockey in the 90's, that Lidstrom leaving means the changing of the guard is nearly complete from the all-stars I grew up with.

Sakic, Forsberg, Yzerman, Shanahan, Lidstrom, Chelios, Modano, Nieuwendyk, Gilmour, Niedermayer, Stevens, Lemieux, Roy, Hasek, Modano, Bourque, Leetch, Kariya, Sundin, Robitaille, Hull, Pronger...

Once Brodeur, Jagr, Selanne, and Alfredsson go, that will be the end of the 90's greats in the NHL.

Nostalgia.

Hard to put into words. As long as I've been watching hockey, and the Wings, #5 has been part of the team. Thanks for the nice summary Mark. You can't replace a legend like Lidstrom. You can only hope to patch over the gaping hole. I think most of us fans knew this was coming, for the most part, but it's still a sad day. I wish last year wasn't his last because it was such a stinker, but you can't always call your shot. Best wishes in retirement, you earned it Nick.

Easily one of my top 5 favorite players ever. It sucks for me seeing him go, can't imagine how you guys feel. He's everything you want in a player.

Wow. Sad to see Nicky go. Im so glad i had the pleasure of watching one of the best of all time. Hes the epitome of a professional athelete and should be what everyone strives to be. I wont miss him tearing apart the blackhawks, but its sad to see the end of an era. Cheers and enjoy your retirement #5

Pure class! Sad to see such a great player leave the game. As much as I cheered against the Wings (mainly because they've been so good for so long), you can't help but give Lidstrom a standing ovation.

Best defenseman since Orr, who in my opinion was the best player ever.

Congratulations on a great career. Wings fans you have been blessed watching one of the true greats of the game. A loss for the sport. Now go get Weber?

Orr wasn't as good as Lidstrom away from the puck. Lidstrom = Best player without the puck ever.

I thought for sure with the Winter Classic he would play one more year considering his high caliber play still.

Just happy to have seen him play from beginning to end, congrats to him going out on his own terms
