Thanks for your daily blog as I am always interested in hearing what options the Flyers have and going thru them in small groups of players help out. I look forward to the draft and the start of free agency. Just hope they get the new CBA in place without missing any games. I will look forward to the conversations when the draft and free agency gets closer.

Nice blog bill. Garrison made my 12-13 roster v. 1.0. His game is exactly what the flyers could use on the back end.

Thanks for the job over the holiday weekend Bill!
As for Garrison I agree with the other posters that he is exactly what the Flyers could use and imo should be their prime target. I'm curious what you thinnk he will sign for though, any idea? I think the Flyers would over pay for him somewhere around 3 or maybe 4 mill but to me that's better than overpaying for Ryan Suter at 7 mill. What say you?

For the first time in a long time I'm clueless about whatthis team will do in the offseason. Love the way this team is now and don't want to gut it for Weber. I love Parise, but I think the Devils and Rangers lead that race. Really, unsure what the Flyers will do.

I think the world of Zach Parise but I think the Flyers need to go in another direction. There's plenty of forwards on this team that can play the top two lines, either ready to go now or in 1-2 years. Also I think it's imperative to use the salary you'd be paying for Parise to find a replacement for Pronger and Timmonen's eventual successor.

Just to elaborate some more here on rebuilding the d-corps: I've been reading a bit here and there in comment sections as well as hearing from people starting to jump on this Lavy witch hunt. While I believe the coach shares some responsibility I'm not sure it's time to start running one of the better coaches this franchise has had out of town. Reason being, Yes he had success in 2010 and got us within two wins of a Stanley cup, the only other coach to get us that close was Keenan who went on to win a cup with (ugh I can't bring myself to type that). Now he did struggle the last two years against teams who play a rough and tumble aggressive forecheck such as, the Rangers, Bruins and now the Devils, however in the past two seasons, he's been without a healthy Pronger and Timmonen. That right there, to me is the biggest thing that needs to be addressed going forward. If people want to point the finger at the goalie which is so easy to do, I say just look at how the so-called king did with a proven defensive team in front of him against the devils. The problem right now is the Flyers don't have enough two-way defenseman that can move the puck.

They don't need an elite class player like Suter or weber, who would help for sure and i would love to have, but where are those guys right now? and what elite d-men does NJ have? They have high caliber dmen for sure but I don't think they are as good as Weber and Suter individually.

Timonen hasn't been himself the past two playoffs and Pronger hasn't been healthy and all signs indicate he's finished. When we had those two guys at or around 100% this was one of the best teams in the League. Therefore bring in players like Garrison who are top-notch but not bank breakers, that's just my two cents, tho...

I like your approach and I like Lavy. I'm thinking more and more JVR/Bob should be dealt for Luke Schenn/David Steckel if possible to improve the D at a reasonable cost. I love love love JVR but the thought of a 6'5" 4th line center that can win faceoffs and a good young D-Man with low PIMs and 200+ hits a season is really enticing (also Brayden's brother).

Resign Voracek, Carle (or if not get Garrison), Sestito. Sign a cheap UFA goalie like Biron to back up Bryz. Done.

FORWARDS
Scott Hartnell / Claude Giroux / Jakub Voracek
Brayden Schenn / Danny Briere / Wayne Simmonds
Eric Wellwood / Sean Couturier / Matt Read
Tom Sestito / David Steckel / Maxime Talbot
Zac Rinaldo

DEFENSEMEN
Kimmo Timonen / Braydon Coburn
Matt Carle (or Garrison) / Luke Schenn
Andrej Meszaros / Nicklas Grossmann
Andreas Lilja

I don't think this lineup would be a clear improvement over the past season. If the Flyers are going to trade JVR and also not re-sign Jagr, I'd want to see a clear-cut upgrade somewhere in the lineup.

I would stay away from Garrison because like Bill said there is pressure in big markets for defenseman and goaltending. Two guys who had good/career years when nothing was expected were Ron Hainsey and Wiznewski. These guys got over 5 million per and are simply not worth it, they are not impact defenseman at all, especially for the cap hit. I would resign Carle before giving Garrison between 3-5 million. I always question players who have "great" years were nobody cares about hockey and hence no real pressure.

It seems trading for an impact defenseman is the route to go.

i think a draft day trade of JvR, Schenn, Meszaros and a 1st for Mr. Weber will go down.

Bill,

How do you feel about the Flyers trading up and grabbing a guy like Griffen Reinhart in this draft?

not bad....

I think Parise gets more than 6.2 on the open market.....I also think the Flyers move Bob and bring in someone cheaper and who is more slated to be a backup....but then again, it all depends on what the new CBA is....

He'd be a good plan B. While he doesn't seem to be a Finger type player, there's risks, but Garrison has had two really solid years with the Panthers.

I still wonder if Holmgren has a draft deal going down that comes out of left field again.

Based on how he's done things we have to think he could have something working.

I'll stick with the approach to sit at whatever pick they have in round 1 or consider moving back to gain at least another pick if not two.

Pros and cons to every possible move-or lack of a move. I'm good so long as any deal makes sense.

As am I. A good read on another prospect Scott Laughton by Todd Cordell. You'll get a kick though out of who he is compared to at the pro level.

Just wish I'd known about him more when I saw Oshawa play. But the tape of him is good.

Thank you Bill for the article, you keep us Flyer fans sane while we wait for the offseason to begin. I figure this offseason will add player/players who will make this team a cup contender. I really think Homer will make some finishing touches and next year this Flyers team will be badass.
