Awesome blog as always Bill, I'm just curious with Matt Read, do you see any similarities between him and Dave Poulin? His college upbringing, two-way play and build are similar to Poulin's wouldn't you say?

From Day 1, I have seen him more as Greg Johnson than Dave Poulin. I don't think Read will ever be a team captain or a Selke Trophy candidate (which is not to say Read isn't solid defensively). Read is a faster skater than Poulin ever was, but Poulin (though not tall) was stronger physically.

yea I doubt he'll ever be captain here wasn't really thinking about that, but the strength is a factor I didn't consider, one thing about Poulin I overlooked, k thanks!

I just knew you were smiling going into that third period last night!
Aw the kids are all grown up now and bring home a cup at last... oh wait

Anyway now that I've watched more Kings games, I can't help but like that team. I thought the world might end when Quick gave up that goal from the red-line the other night, thought only Flyers goalies do such things but that is a likeable bunch.
Richards and Carter are fine additions to that team. Kopitar is on fire too, just a solid rounded team.

I think the trade of both carter and Richards did wonders for them.....they had become stale...I think it woke both of them up.

I will def root for the Kinga in the finals....but more for Gagne and Hextall than anyone else.

Regarding the Cap... What about Shelley and his $1.1M cap hit. He wasn't used much during the second half of the season. Can they, or shouldn't they send him down or buy him out and use that money to sign someone else? From what I've seen from Rinaldo (light-weight) and Sestito (heavy-weight), they should be able to handle the roughstuff at a reduced price.

Homer seems to be good at finding the late bloomers, unsigned, diamond in the rough. I'd put Powe in the same category. Read, Johnson, Powe, etc... The big bonus of these guys is their trade value. Take Powe; Homer signed him, he played well, and his value moved from zero to a 3rd round pick. I bet we could do better with Read. With the exception of injury, most Flyers are gaining in value. Which leads to better trade options, more picks, higher picks... Well done Homer.

There is no such thing as sending a player down during the Off Season.

"Currently, a player must have played at least 41 games for the championship team during the regular season (provided the player remains with the team when they win the Cup) or played in at least one game of the Stanley Cup Finals. However, since 1994 teams have been permitted to petition the NHL Commissioner, to be considered on a case-by-case basis, to engrave a player's name on the cup if the player was unavailable to play due to "extenuating circumstances"."

Gags played 34 games this year. Although they could petition, it's usually something a bit bigger than a regular hockey injury that constitutes "extenuating circumstances."

I would think Gagne gets on the Cup...he has been out with a Concussion....same think that Savard was out with and he got on the Cup for the Bruins. They have to play the 41 games or 1 game in the finals.....but I believe Sutter already said in not so many words that gagne has ZERO chance of getting into a game at this point.

I like Kesler but it really depends on the plus. Not sure if Vancouver is looking to move him but his deal isnt bad either. 4 years at $5M per. Doesn't he have a NTC and is he willing to waive it?

They made the choice to keep Kesler over Cody.

20/20, Clarke should of fattened up that offer sheet.

George Parros played 32 games with the 2006-07 Anaheim Ducks, and 5 playoff games, none in the Final. He suffered no injuries, just didn't dress. His name is on the Stanley Cup. If Los Angeles wins, Gagne's name will be there.

The lone way to move Shelley's hit off the summertime cap would be a trade. More troubling is Matt Walker's $1.7mm counting during the summer.

His NTC kicks in July 1st, I don't think the Canucks would move him. But I didn't think Philly would move Richards either! If the Sedin's were in the final year of their contract I think they may consider it, but I think they'll try and make one more run at a Cup with this core group.

I believe all a player needs to do to be "automatic" is to appear in one playoff game.

Love to see Gagne get his name on it, but really to me I'd be most happy for Hextall. Just too bad it seems players have to go elsewhere to win the cup.. Brindy, Williams etc.. wish we could make it happen here!
