Couturier needs a bigger role next year. No reason for him to be on the 4th line next season. I agree with your entire blog, nice work (as usual).

I think a line with him Schenn and Read would be very good.

Coots is (already) going to be a fantastic player. The one thing that stands out to me above all is his awareness on the ice. He knows where he should be and what to do when he gets there.. There are vets that dont have that at his level.

Couturier's hockey sense and instincts are stellar for a teenager. He also has a strong desire that is evident in his play. The Flyers got an absolute steal.

In terms of his overall development he needs to be exposed to a larger team role next season. I believe he should be slotted into the #2 center position and given the opportunity that clearly moves him into the top 6 in playing time. Love the kid, he plays with an edge, takes care of his own end and stands up for his team mates. This is not a prima donna who wants special treatment, he gets his nose dirty every night and has a work ethic that will allow the Flyers fan to forget the role Mike Richards played (even if LA wins the Stanley Cup).

I'm excited for the very near future when the Flyers have a 6-4, 215 lb center lining up that can play both ends of the ice. A top checking line Center that can put up 50-70 pts. Play in all situations, and take key faceoffs. The 1-2 punch with Giroux gives the Flyers a bright future going forward.

Bill,

Ummm, you didn't need to elaborate on the headline. It says all we needed to know: Couturier

In the last few days, both Panaccio and Carchidi have written very solid and well balanced articles about Bryzgalov. I'm thinking that the Mayans might be onto something

I'm just wondering who wrote that for Panotch. I'd never guess he understood the game well enough to write that.

Bill,

Completely off topic here:

When would be the earliest the Flyers could/would sign Carle to a contract?

As soon as the new cap is in place, which usually happens around July 1st

I think Tim nailed it on this one. Agree with him about both Bryzgalov and Bobrovsky's seasons.

What caught my eye was the video link for "Who's to blame for Flyers' playoff exit?", with those three great hockey minds - Eskin, Ron Burke, and Werndl (who?).

He really did. I really wish that these sort of articles were the norm from the local MSM than something we pull aside and give kudos to. Tim actually summarized my opinions on the two goaltenders very well.

Hell, I even wholeheartedly agreed with his idea of who to pursue as a backup for Bryz

The resident cap expert would be the better respondent, but if tagging space was the issue I guess it'd be either July 1, sooner if a trade was made to clear space.

I don't think it's that late. July 1 is the start of UFA. The Cap is announced way before that to resign players.

Even if it's announced, I don't think it actually takes effect until July 1. Another question to forward to the resident capologist, methinks.

It will be before July 1, For example, last year it was June, 23. Which was the last day of the NHL draft. So I would expect around the same time.

Generally, the new cap is announced at the end of June, very close to July 1st. Last year the cap was announced June 23rd. The year before it was June 24th.

Also the new cap doesn't come into play until July 1st, so while they can sign him prior to July 1st, they won't be able to make it official until then, unless they make a trade before hand

But in the case of Carle, they should be able to process it as an extension. As I understand it, during the season you can not have a payroll over what the cap currently is for next year, and thats the reason we cant sign Carle. We already have all the current cap money spoken for with Grossmann, and JVR's extensions. As soon as the NHL says the Cap goes up, then the Flyers can use that extra space to sign Carle.
