Sounds like a hefty, and far-fetched investment for the NHL to stick their hands into. How would invisible tracking beams on the blue line work? Their are 10 players crossing that line at any given moment, you're telling me you think it's realistic for these 'tracking beams' to realize which player is on which team? Ridiculous. Besides, that's a call that gets called correctly at least 90% of the time. Other times are close calls that could go either way, and maybe once a game their is a blatant offsides that goes uncalled, or the other way around.

And with the chip in the puck to review goals.... Majority of the time it's not whether the puck crossed the line or not, but whether the whistle had blown, was going to blow, or had 'intent to blow'. Not sure where a microchip would come into play there.

Maybe we can set players up with avatars to eliminate concussions. Excellent read, but let's leave computerized chips out of it. I fully understand why people want to change it up and to adjust with today's technological advances, but the game needs that human element. Let's say, hypothetically, the briere goal in game 1 was called offside because of the chip, let's say Pitt scores on the next shift, now they would be 4-0 and Philly probably doesn't come back and maybe Pitt sweeps them in a no contest series. I know it's all hypothetical, but the human element is what brings that variable to every game that makes us feel human. The debates, the shouting, the laughing (if your team got away with one, am I right Philly fans), the passion. I love that part of the game, I don't want to see it change.

Good list of suggestions, but I don't think it even needs to be that complex.

Right now, referees are displayed as infallible by the league. Yet we know they are human and are very fallible. The stance of the NHL encourages a fans' interpretation of referee bias simply because the topic is considered taboo and it is never addressed. $10k fines are doled out for questioning the unquestionable.

I would simply love to see a visible QA system that projects an attempt at uniformity by the officiating staff.

The problem isn't that the officials are human. The problem is the fact that the league is trying to convince us otherwise.

Thanks

Having read both your "ref" blogs, I greatly preferred the first. When players and coaches screw up they have to face the music - no doubt refs face their own brand of music but it really isn't the same.
Officiating has gone drastically downhill in the past couple of years.
But while we're talking about the goal that put the defending Champs out... how about that softie of a penalty call in their favour with 2.5 minutes left in game 7? The word for you - W T F.

Hockey is getting to serious & to complicated.

The human factor and the element of mistake always seemed to lend to the aura and entertainment of the game. Now everyone wants perfection. Replays, war rooms, resetting clocks to the tenth of a second and officials meeting way to often to second guess decisions.
Well, in my opinion. Perfection is boring. I was thoroughly entertained by the Pitt vs Philly series and the NY vs Ottawa series. Both series were anything but perfect. And that included the officiating. But the games kept you on the edge of your seat. Bottom line. Both series were fun to watch.

I was brought up watching hockey during the 70's and 80's. Thats the game that hooked me.

Today I find 30 to 40 blocked shots a game to be very frustrating to watch. The shoot out is nothing more than a gimmick to entertain casual fans. Yes, the game has changed. There are some who still want more changes. I for one am not convinced the game is any better then the game that hooked me. Different yes! Better? No so sure.

Why cant we just enjoy hockey for what it is. One hell of a game.

BTW SCLI, you are one hundred percent correct. Hockey when I was a kid was a different brand and if you ask me it was a better brand! The rivalries, the game was played with real emotion. When someone fought it was a real fight, these guys hated eachother or were sticking up for eachother. Not these WWF wrestling matches they have today. The game was just played with more emotion, there always seemed to be more on the line then there is today. Not only talking about the Islanders either, obviously the team we have now plays like a bunch of pansies

Has anyone ever taken a poll among the officials as to which flavor Muffin is their fav? Maybe ask them what flavor they would like to see introduced?
Maybe if the media around the league would involve them more in the things that REALLY matter... maybe games would get called better.... Get called fairer!!
