Drafting a stud on defense at the draft will help a lot. Oilers have stop gaps at defense but no one who really consistently WOWs people. Get that at the draft in rounds 1, 2 and maybe 3.

Do what St. Louis, Colorado and Los Angeles did. Ship off the vets (Smyth was one of them) for young talent. Keep/get a few for leadership (McDonald, O'Brien, Giguere, Greene) but let the kids roam.

Do these two and bring some stability and an identity to the team

Heavy stuff. Bit of a shakeup might not be a bad idea don't call it a blow up though. Still going to be an interesting summer. I'm officially on the trade the draft pick for Carlson train. Anyone else wanna jump on?

Reinhart would be a good fit there IMO. He's ranked 10th and might be a reach but he's got serious potential.

By my math, at least a quarter of the roster needs to be gone next season. That's blowing a team up.

Realistically let's break down our lines
Hall-Nuge-Eberle - obviously a given they stay
Smyth-Gagner-Hemsky- No one knows for sure what's going on with Smyth so won't make judgement there. Gagner stays. Was the purpose of resigning Hemsky to keep him or to deal him for something better? Time will tell.
Eager-Horcoff-Jones - Eager good, Horc captain, Jones is becoming expendable.
Petrel-Belanger-Hordi - Keep Petrell, Hordi gone, if Belanger is a problem send him away

On D
Whitney-Schulz - Whitney seems great in the locker room but someone like Carlson would send him packing
Petry-Smid -Keep
Sutton - Keep

Really those likely to leave could consist of Whitney, Belanger, Jones, Hemsky or Smyth, Hordichuk, Peckham, Potter, Barker

Exactly, realistically does our pick = Carlson and whichever of Washington's picks is lower? Maybe an Omark or a second goes into that package.

Schultz is playing less minutes than Smid, Petry, and sometimes Potter. I don't think he's on the top pairing. Unless you're just listing.

This Oiler's club needs to keep its 2012 1st round pick and trade away its 2013 1st round draft pick at the draft or early next year just to put in these kids head that they are not trying to be dead last.

This way their is no excuses and put pressure on ST to get in the playoffs...

Losing culture is running through the room and its spreading like my VD.

That is all.

Bang on. Its not about talent anymore, there is a bad bad culture in this room and I don't know what it is but they better figure it out or we will spin and spin and spin until these great young talents decide to skip town. When you watch these games there is absolutely no passion in the veterans. There was no passion in November when the thing started going off the rails just a little and the season could have been saved. Yes Smity, Hemmer and gulp belanger this is when you kick in with a goal or two a game. I still think, and always will, that Hemmer is a pouter and only brings those who compete down, why should he get time he does nothing. The boys don't look happy in interviews, did you watch the Hall interview there is no excitement there. Feel bad for Renney but he has lost the room.

I would rather watch almost all young guys up here playing. Think about it

hall,rnh,eberle
MPS,Gagner, omark
Petrell,lander, hartikinin
green,horcoff,vandevelde

Forwards: Not much less scoring than we have now and I bet more passion because the talent will be the leaders and the 4th liners will be happy to be in the show, just lacking a little size. Gut out the Sh1tty vets now!

whitney, schultz
smid, petry,
sutton, ???

Don't think the D has heart probs just tallent probs, really need to pick up a high end talent

Duby,
????,

Again give him the batton, he can't be worse than the 29th place we are in now.

If their is a rift in the room that has the kids and the coach vs. the vets. Then perhaps management has to stick with the kids and the coach. This team is being built around Hall, Ebs, RNH and to a lesser extent Gagner. If they like the coaching and the coaching is good with them but the vets who will be gone in 1- years have an issue, then the solution is easy. Bye bye Smyth, Horcs, Hemmer, Jones, Belanger. Buy outs, and 7th round picks for all.

Don't get me wrong, Smyth has been a great warrior for the Oilers and his experience could help the kids. But Hall, Ebs and RNH seem to get it and don't need their hands held. Horcoff was alright once, got paid and hasn't been good since. Poor leadership leads to a poor team. Hemsky is very talented. But if his attitude has soured because a younger player who has outplayed him at every aspect is receiving the much deserved credit, well either suck it up or ship out. Jones, a dime a dozen. There are hundreds of players who can play 3rd line minutes. Some of them are even grittier. Belanger, thanks for the faceoffs, but outside of that you have been irrevelant.

It's the youth that matters, not the players on their last legs who are basically playing out a contract.

Just for a couple of you slow ones out there Cloutier just made this up. He is just saying theoritcally it could be like this. I dont believe this one bit. Renney is just referring to a lack luster effort and he knows his days are numbered.

Tambellini can't wait that long.

Need to take the guy whose most Nhl ready or trade the pick for a top pairing Nhl defenseman.

I think Murray is ready to go and will be a top pairing defenseman in 3 years.

Boy Petry has picked up his game.
