Eric Smith: Are The Kings Repeating the Blue Jackets Mistake The Blue Jackets moved one of their two big chips as they sent center Jeff Carter packing to Los Angeles for defenseman Jack Johnson and and a first round pick in either the 2012 or 2013 Entry Draft depending if the Kings make the playoffs.

The question now is if Kings general manager Dean Lombardi is falling into the same trap that Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson did last summer?

It appears the Kings may be repeating the Flyers mistake.

With Jeff Carter it's like when you were in school and you want to date the pretty cheerleader. Blah blah blah blah

He's saying the 300 goals that Carter/Richards scored while they were playing for the Flyers were a mistake.

How many did Carter score in the playoffs when it mattered?

So a 1st, 2nd, Schenn, Simmonds, and Johnson is what the Kings gave up to get Richie and Carter? Sorry, that's as big of a mistake as it was to give up Couturier & Voracek for Carter.

Bottom line I still get the feeling they wont win the Cup, yes they will be that top tier team for the next decade but they need consistant forwards that won't go down with injury or hurt themselves eating pancakes.Namely Penner, Gagné, Williams.

Look, don't get me wrong, Carter hasn't done anything for the Kings yet. But I love Carter/Richard's former teams fans saying they are pieces of crap. Let's let it play out. And Boston fan, went almost 40 years without a Cup win. Remember, if the Kings win a Cup, we are allowed to act high and mighty like you all do now.

On a side note, something we all can agree on, F oil companies and gas stations, eh?

Honestly the way I see things you guys make out pretty decent in the end. It's a trade that doesn't really hurt either, if anything makes you better now and in the future. Hopefully it shows to Nash that you aren't just selling everything.

GM on the hot seat to make the playoffs. Just like why the hell would Howson acquire a centerman that 95% of people knew wouldn't work well with Nash?

Its hard to sell tickets to a soccer match on skates. Fans want to see goals.

Until some games are played hard to say whether it was a desperation move or not. Goal scorers like Carter are not as commonplace in the NHL these days.
Isn't the guy a top 5 goal scorer the last 4 years. Had he not been injured this year he would easily project to 30+ again.

The Kings have not had a sniper like this since Ziggy was playing for them.

Until we actually see some games you have to look at who got the best player, statistically that is Carter. But you could argue character wise is Jack is the best.

There have been comments he lacks good hockey sense, maybe that is it, all players make bad decisions, but his always seem to result in the other team scoring goals it was uncanny. His near minus 100 cannot be overlooked.

I personally liked him, a great deal, a stand up guy, I will missing seeing him play on a regular basis. I know when the Jackets come back to Los Angeles the fans there will give him a standing O. And its not because he was a great defensemen, he's not (good yes, great no), but its because the guy will leave it out there every night, that had tons of character. Truth be know he might have been better served to wear the C, or at least the A, with the Kings. I am sure he will have an A or C on his shoulder in Columbus very soon.

I don't even file it under a mistake. i think only Columbus made the mistake, as mentioned, in that Carter and Nash, from almost everyone's perspective, are not players set up to work well with one another. Carter is off to LA with his buddy and probably will be far more motivated to succeed than in Columbus, in my opinion. It'll probably spark Richards as well. The talk of the Flyer's locker room being divided with Carter and Richards on one side and Pronger and others on the other side seemingly played the main role in the demise of those two as Flyers. You just don't deal your captain unless there is a serious divide. Sounds like the same deal with Richards and Brown in LA. Time will tell there.
All I know is Carter actually fits the exact need of what the Kings need. Thats the key for me. He brings the legit ability to score 35-40 goals every year and can play any role you toss at him if he is feeling inspired to play. I think all the party side talk will disappear and what will be left is a goal scorer producing as he should and as his contract suggests he should.

Its weird, Carter was nothing less than a perfect citizen while in the Soo. Funny what money and fame can do...

Seriosuly, when I saw the pic it reminded me of pretty much every night of my life while I was in university. Getting drunk with buddies at the bar. Unless you're from Utah, I don't see why it'd make anyone uncomfortable.

and pronger may never play again.... so it may not work out so well for the flyers it the short term, as it looks.
all i know, is carter should have been a leaf. just like he had to abandon tenacity and truculance to make the team better, burke needs to abandon his stance on long contracts, or we will NEVER have any elite talent... and that is a sad state of affairs.
Carter's cap hit was 5mill.... 3-400k more than connolly. i don't care if it's for 30yrs.

Please, I was acting high and mighty long before the Bruins won the Cup.

Seriously though, I like Richards and Carter, dating way back on the World Juniors squad. Maybe they can drop the bottle long enough to dedicate themselves more to winning.

I like LA. Them or Nashville out west is who I am rooting for.

Agree, as long as these guys produce on the ice, I would not care if they have
drunken orgies every other night.
