Oilers aren't going to trade Lander and a 2nd for Leopold. Why do that?

Depends on who is there and healthy. I'm not sure Leopold is better than Petry, Whitney, Smid and Gilbert when everyone is healthy.

Great blog Rich! Hope you get better soon

Sign Hemmer for 2 yrs at nearly $5 million/year and trade Omark.
Also trade Peckham and possibly Jones. I love Ryan Jones and he will always be the wildcard(you know, the guy that does great things at random times) but if we get a good return we could let him go. Eager fills alot of what Jones brings...except the wildcard part.. and penalty killing too...
argh...its hard to say what to do with Jones...

im sure RNH felt great the first time and look what happened. Management has no need to rush him and they shouldnt. I have learned from experience the hard way that rushing back to play after being hurt when you are young only makes it more difficult when you get older. They are doing him a favor keeping him out

Potential for next years lines:

Hall Nuge Hemsky
Pajaarvi Gagner Eberle
Smyth Horcoff ____(Jones? or ?)
____ Lander Eager

13th forward Hordichuk

Petry Whitney
Gilbert Smid
____(Sutton or??) Teubert? or ???

Sutton? (7th D man)

So as you can see EDM is about 2-3 players away from being a complete team.
We can sign another 4th liner. thats easy. We could also promote from the farm for that 4th liner. We can also play Hordichuk in there.

D wise, its a bit different. Will Klefbom come over to North America and play in EDM next year? If not then we need to draft a world class D man.

Then the last issue is who do we want in Ryan Jones spot if Jones is traded.... right now im not sure...

that 'hit' on the Nuge's shoulder when he came back clearly exposed Nuge for being too small and weak. He needs strength.

oh God, i forgot about that loser. Why havent we given him away yet? He can penalty kill AND THAT IS IT!
Reminds me of Marty Reasoner.

And why does Belanger ALWAYS have to take that stupid (way) inaccurate slap shot EVERY time he shoots. Obvisously he hasnt been taught to shoot in a variety of ways... thats just another thing about Eric that pisses me off.

Hemsky is not work 5 million/season for three years and he should be traded if there is substantial interest. I get as excited by some of the things he does as much as anyone but there are too many reasons not to resign him. In addition to the moodiness/injuries/etc you mention, too many plays die with him at the blue line. He is the turnover king. While his production has improved as of late, he still struggles to get to the tougher areas. The oilers would be much better off if they could get more depth in Defence and goaltending. As everyone knows, predicting NHL defencemen is not an easy thing to do so the more you have in the system, the better you improve your odds. Smid and Petry are prime examples of a success story but look at all the ones management has brought in that have not panned out. Also, Omark will come into the line-up at a cheap salary. This will provide cap room for a one of: a tender, Dmen and signing the kids. The future lies with them, not Hemsky.

I like how you omitted the goalies from this.

As for the lines they are pretty accurate. Ideally you get someone better than Jones and he is on your 4th line. Would give you some real nice depth up front. As for the backend, need someone else can play top 4 minutes.

Hemsky at five million per is a terrible waste. Far better to keep youngsters and use the money in free agency.

Thanks! I did omit the goalies on purpose. I hope Crappybulin joins Eric Belanger on the retired line... or gets traded.

Jones to the 4th line is perfect and then we would need to fill the 3rd line with someone farily good.
Defense wise.... a top 4 guy would complete us.

let's keep him, great depth guys that are absolute fan favourites don't come by that often. He got to where he did in Edmonton by sheer determination and hard work. That kind of thing tends to rub off on your team mates. I think he is more valuable to the Oilers than whatever points he puts up. Just my 2 cents on Jonesy.

Doubtful, he has a 3 year contract, so he will be winning faceoofs and killing penalties with us for a bit longer still. I just wish he wouldn't set a foot on the ice during the power play. Other than that i am fine with him.

ok Eric the Bad can be 4th line center on 5on5 situations who wins faceoffs and then quickly leaves the ice. He should also play on the PK and THAT IS IT!
I would rather see Jones out there banging on the PP a million times over than see Eric the Bad out there.

I am starting to see why we need to keep Ryan 'Wildcard' Jones.

didnt expose him for being small and weak at all. By that logic, eberles lil skate tie up with jamie benn that injured his knee means he is small and weak. Doesnt matter how big ya are, if you suffer an injury to a joint, the smallest bump the wrong way can re-injure it.
