1st 1st. Sundin is a beast. I'll never forget when he was asked if he felt relieved to finally get his 500th goal. He replied with "what do you mean finally??" |

I remember that draft.
True story. My girlfriend (at the time) was in the process of stumbling down the stairs (heels and carpet not a good combination) and right before I heard the thump when she hit the wall I hear the words "we have a trade to announce". There was a nanosecond where I paused on whether I should run to go check on my girlfriend (who was shaken but alright). |

Though he angered a segment of the club’s enormous fan-base by refusing to surrender a no-trade clause in his final Toronto season, Sundin was quickly, and rightly, forgiven – those same admirers bringing him to tears before a face-off at the Air Canada Centre the following season, as he skated for the Vancouver Canucks - hberger
Actually I am still angry and have never forgiven the NTC thing |

The deal was for Grabovski, who we ended up with anyway. |

For negotiating rights after the season if he signed with Montreal.
At the trade deadline it was a much different package.

What was it? Everyone assumes that trading Sundin would have brought a return that would have turned the franchise around but no one has been able to say what was actually offered for him. |

Bobby Ryan was a rumor. Never knew how much stock to put in that...
The expected return seemed to be an elite prospect and a first round pick. |

I remember Burke being quoted as saying "Not a chance" (tsn I believe) when asked about trading for a center like Sundin at that years deadline. |

Yeah, that does sound like something Burke would say. Never plays his hand.
However, any playoff team that would have acquired him that year would have seen their Stanley Cup chances improve considerably.
Marginal playoff teams would have been contenders. Contenders would have become favorites to win it all.
Can you imagine Getzlaf-Sundin as your top two centres? |
