I guess the Isles and the Wings seem to be allowing the Caps to make the big dance!

#Isles Injury Update: Scott Mayfield had successful season ending surgery. He is expected to make a full recovery and not have any issues with his summer training regiment.

Nothing like a good surgery in the first year of an ill-advised 7 year deal for a 31yo defenseman

Interesting that Lou would trade an established Dmen who’s a top 4 and had more upside in Devon Toews. But, when Mayfields value hit its high, rather than squeeze as much as he could via trade, he opted to lock him up long term.

Flagged this by accident, sorry

Toews, as bad as a move as that was, ended up just being a casualty of the flat-cap. No Covid and we likely still have Toews. I'd much rather have moved Leddy even if we had to pay to do it, or almost anyone really, but not going to dredge up that whole nightmare again.

Yeah I just feel like at one point the isles had the strongest backend on paper and now that’s changed. Like what ever happened to Bode Wilde? Not to enter the politics of it, but do we just pretend it was right to block him from playing for not wanting the vaccine? Is there a correlation between the vaccine rule and Pfizer being advertised on the boards during games?

Vaccine or not, Bode Wilde has now bounced around from:

- the AHL
- the Swedish second-tier league
- the ECHL
- the Slovakian league (I think the top league?)

and is now playing in the EIHL, in Wales.

I think it's clear he wasn't an NHL player whether he got vaccinated or not

I was high on him, I thought he could be a Brent Burns-y kind of offensive defenseman that would probably never be a great defender. He seemed like he had a knack for scoring more goals than most defensemen.

But, like most prospects, he just didn't pan out. It happens. The odds of a second round pick playing 100 or more games is in the 30% range.

Whatever the league avg is for players panning out, I’m gonna guess the isles stats are among the leagues low end. Back in the day the Wings were the best at finding the Swedes and Russians at the draft. I’d like to see the isles put more recourses into scouting. Find the talent, don’t just thank Matt Martin for leading the league in hits, with a cushy scouting job.

This is because the Wings had Jimmy D who build the Islanders dynasty.

I'll never understand the Pierre and Mayfield deals. Even giving Lee 7 years was bad.

Yeah i get it, but I’m hoping the drafting is better, and we don’t have to watch as many top 5 picks try and put it together. Maybe it’s a developement issue as well?!?!

The long term tells me Lou has trouble getting guys to commit there, so he has to offer term 🤷🏻‍♂️

It is a development issue as well. Not every draft pick is going to work out. If you have scouts who know what they are doing, you can still have a good prospect pool and it's still not a good idea to try all the #1 picks.

You still do not give out bad contracts. You sign UFA's to 1- or two-year deals and you use players from the minors even if they are not star players. At least, maybe they can buy you time to get better players or prospects. You cannot give out long term contracts to bottom pair players. If you lose them, you lose them. Lou thinks he is Oprah and everyone gets a 7-year deal.

Leave it to Twitter to assume somebody wants to take the crap that we don't want. And that's before they even ignore his full NTC

7 years was not bad enough that Lou had to add a full NTC. He should have been fired after giving these deals to Pierre and Mayfield.

Barry did a great job with the Islanders, and I would have loved for Barry to finish his 5 years coaching the team and then take over as GM, but that ship has sailed. The roster has to be good enough to win a Cup. You cannot just rely on a system and coaching. The Islanders did not lose to Tampa twice because of bad luck. There were simply not good enough.
