team should be tanking for Celibrini right now. Instead they are striving to get knocked out in the first and pick in the middle of the first.

We’ve seen the team finish dead last and pick 4th. They were bumped back multiple due to bingo balls. I would love to see some lotto luck, but that just doesn’t seem to work out for this club

so we are destined to be a middling team and sign guys like Copp and Holl.
id rather continue picking in the top 5 then be a middling team that hopes other teams lose in order to make the playoffs.

Copp and Holl, bad signings for sure. They’re also plugging holes. There’s not an infallible Yzerplan but the focus on scoring last summer resulted in more goals. Let’s see what they focus on this year. The team goes through fairly significant changes each year. We don’t know what Danielson will turn into, or Sandin Pelikka, or Edvinsson. There are good things on the way. This is the closest we’ve been to the playoffs and you’ve got fans saying Yzerman should be fired if they don’t make it and others wanting him to tank. The team moved forward to be in the mix at this point. I don’t think they should “tank” because it kills the culture. Many of you and myself said that this group will decide if they’re in or out. I respectfully disagree, but love the passion you have for the team. Thank you so much for being part of this, you’re a name I love seeing in the chat even if we’re on different sides of the issues

Yzerman was basically screwed no matter what.

Pretty much if you're going to commit to a full teardown, scorched earth rebuild, you basically have to hit on at least 1-2 elite players in the next 4ish years, max, or you're pretty much doomed to either (A) try to make a go of it with what you have (and probably not get much past the middle) or (B) tear it down again and start the cycle completely over.

You can argue that (B) is the better option from a rational, objective perspective but the truth is that no GM is going to survive it. Owners and fans won't tolerate 7+ years of being completely out of the running by Thanksgiving, at least not without a regime change somewhere along the way.

Should the Red Wings tank, or have kept tanking? Maybe. That would definitely have meant trading Larkin. Frankly, it probably would mean even Seider and Raymond are on the board. It also probably would have cost Yzerman his job, with no guarantee his replacement would be any better.

That 2018-2021 draft window was really critical for Detroit. From where they finished, they had a 78% chance to get at least 1 lottery pick (1st, 2nd, or 3rd overall) over that span, and a 34% chance to get 2 or more. As we all know, they got zero, and picked 6th, 6th, 4th, and 6th. The only truly elite player available at any of those spots in any of those drafts was Quinn Hughes in 2018, and that one was on Holland's watch.

Building a contender requires smart decision making and luck. Yzerman's made plenty of mistakes, but he's made a ton of really smart moves (and the bad ones generally haven't been catastrophic). I think he's a decent GM. But the luck hasn't been there at all.

Let's see what this summer has to offer. There are a # of contenders that can not keep all their rosters in tack even if the cap goes up. Let's see if Y can snaag a 2nd pairing RD and scoring winger or center, along with 1 or 2 goalies.
