For the life of me, I can't figure out what the problem was. Zegras and his agent were perfectly rational and GMPV was being a hard-ass. I've heard a rumor that Henry Samueli got involved and told Verbeek to get a deal done. I don't know the guy who said this but I'm playing golf with some Ducks management guys and I'm definitely going to ask them about this. anyway, it's good to finally get this done. This should have been the easy one, Drysdale is going to be much harder because there are too many guys on the roster who are of a similar skill set as him.

Vertanks negotiating style is really starting to piss me off… he leaves things to the last minute and alienates guys…

Going down the same road with Drysdale…

Fostering a lotta ill will for no good reason.

I think you meant to say there’s Aren’t too many guys on the roster that are like him… at least I hope that’s what you meant

If you start to give kids what they want you'll end up with the mess in Toronto. I think its good for setting standards.

If after 3 yrs, Zegras wants out, then he never really wanted to stay.

Or this could be like Jesper Bratt, 2 bridge deals and the third was the big one.

Well you’ve got to put the “Toronto Mess” in perspective…

Hischier, Dahlin, Hughes, Lafreniere….what do these guys have in common? All first overall picks. All began slow in their first 2 if not 3 years in the league and signed their 2nd contracts before their first big productive years. Their 2nd contracts reflected this.

My comparison McDavid and Matthews produced right from the get-go. There was no way either would be signed to the kind of 2nd contract as the others above were.

Marner had 61,64,94 during his ELC. Nylander had 13 (22 games), 61,61 during his. M Tkatchuk had 48,49,77. Draisaitl had 51, 77, 70

Power, slafkovsky ….TBD

Their 2nd contracts reflected their subpar production at the time the 2nd contract was signed. It worked it out fortuitously for their teams that they took off right after. Conversely it was unfortunate for the Leafs that the league went into a virtual flat cap for 4 years the season after Matthews, Marner and Nylander were signed

Z is the marketing face of the franchise, but he needs to show that he can be the cornerstone player. Last year didn't make that case. I'm OK with $5.75M for what he has shown to date. It seems like a major f-up by the front office that it took this long to get that agreement.

I don't expect Drysdale to be on the opening night roster. Ducks can't afford to sign him long-term coming off the labrum surgery without seeing him play, and the Sanderson deal screwed up the comps big time. The complete lack of news makes it feel like this could still take a while.

Lafreniere has not had a season nearly as efficient as the first three had in their first two or three seasons. He doesn't belong in that comparison. Hischier was a very good rookie then regressed for a few years. Dahlin very good his second season then regressed the next season. Hughes by his third season was impressing. Lafreniere is entering his fourth season and so far has shown nothing more than 2nd/3rd line W at best.

I really thought a 3/18 deal would get it done lickity-split. *Dusts off hands*. He got just a touch under.

Was saving 250k for 3 years worth the bad taste in his mouth?

Maybe. But you better make that kid wanna stay. Then again, maybe Pat sees Leo in that spot in 3 years and plans on shipping Zegras out for assets in other positions. Who knows

This entire post! They agreed on a 3-year deal weeks ago, the sticking point was money. Verbeek was pig-headed at $4 mil while Trevor wanted anything over $5. Why was this so hard? I would bet a lot of money that Zegras won't be in Anaheim after this contract is over.

I really hope you’re wrong - have a feeling though - Z is if the mindset … I’ll show this wiener and then go back east when he has the chance.

I get the feeling Vertank sees Z as a young Seguin not a EP40 type player -

Possible there, but hopefully it blows over. May just be like going to arbitration and team and player both come away ticked off but it just goes away too.

Need to get Drysdale done and hopefully Ducks can just improve this season. Already eyeing up my one game at xmas since Kraken are playing the Ducks

Good to see my Drysdale comment above didn't age well. Happy to have him back in camp. I'm a little surprised at the $$$ for 3 years.
