I'd be very okay with Shattenkirk not back either, but I wouldn't be surprised.

And thanks for that! Now we'll see how accurate the projections end up being...

I think Severson could've been a good fit, but personally, I think an eight-year deal would've been unnecessary risk. I think the back half of that deal could really go south and I'd maybe rather them go for a shorter-term defensive option like Mayfield if he gets to July 1.

Mayfield would be tremendous- I would do the Gavrikov model and see if he goes for that -

I think you're probably right about Shattenkirk, as bad as he was on the ice, he will be good in the locker room with the kids. They just need to shelter his minutes. Pretty bad thing to say about a veteran. This team is going to be drastically different from last year, and I'm OK with that. I think LaCombe is ready and I really think Zelleweger will make the opening night roster. So if they sign Shattenkirk and with Fowler and Drysdale in the line-up, that leaves one spot open in the top 6. Mayfield would be great and I'd also like to try to sign Ryan Graves if possible. Graves is only 28 so there would be a possibility for a longer term deal there.

Ducks have too much draft capital invested in D over the last three years to sign any free agent long-term. Maybe in a year or two, but not before they know what they already have, and it will take a year or two for that to shake out. Shattenkirk fits the need to keep a seat warm and be a good locker room presence until one of the kids is ready for the show, but his game doesn’t really fit what the Ducks need most - a physical presence in front of the net and in the corners.

I’d love to see someone like Mayfield in a Ducks sweater if he can be had on a short-term deal. There will be some guys out there this year looking for shorter term (like Gavrikov with the Kings) because it looks like there will be a big rise in the salary cap next year and the year after. In a perfect world, the Ducks sign someone who they can either flip or extend, depending on how quickly the kids develop.

I expect at least three kids make the jump to the D
this year baby Z, Warren and probably Pavel -

Along with Helleson & LaCombe we should be good with a solid add -

Not about UFA's but I thought it interesting.
A writer on the Athletic suggested trading Zegras for #3 OA .....yeah I know. He said that a center taken at #3 would better suit the Ducks timeline for optimum competition. (paraphrased).
1st, Zegras is gonna get about an 8 x 8 contract or less term but enough to gobble up at least 1 of his UFA years. So CMB would need to give some salary back....
So add Andrew Peeke, a RD that is signed for 3 more yrs at $2.75M. You need a RD and they have too many now. That makes it:
Zegras + a 3rd for #3 + Peeke.....
I don't see you trading Zegras, but I thought I would drop this here anyway. It is a bit of a gamble to think #3 would be better than Zegras at this point.

Kind of missed the point on this, THERE ISN'T A CHANCE IN HELL COLUMBUS TRADES THE #3. He should have just finished off and done the same trade for #1.
