Looking forward to these kids getting their feet wet in the organization.

I think it's going to make for an interesting build process, and I am really optimistic about the chances that Kravtsov and Miller turn into studs. They both have high-end measurable, and I see them both as high-ceiling picks. Lundkvist as well is a youngster in the draft class, so you hope that he continues to kill in Sweden and ultimately looks like a steal. The growth of these three kids are really going to be essential to this rebuild process, so hoping the Rangers knocked it out of the part with them.

Don't know if it's been discussed yet, but they were talking on XM this morning about an article that came out last night about a "new way" GMs may try to circumvent the cap for UFAs. In the case of Tavares it goes like this:

- Islanders can sign him for 8 years
- Any other team can sign him for 7 years

So the scenario goes like this (using Toronto as an example). The Leafs sign Tavares for a ONE year deal at the maximum 20% of the salary cap that a single player can have. After that one year they will then re-sign him for 8 additional years, whereas other teams can only sign him for 7 years.

The benefits of this are that Matthews, Marner, etc, are still on their entry level contracts this year. NEXT year Toronto probably wouldn't be able to pay Tavares that kind of money because they'll be over the cap. By signing him to a big contract in the first year and heavily overloading it while other players are still on their ELC's, when they re-sign him to the next long contract, the AAV of those years will be much lower, and they will be able to keep the other players (Matthews, Marner) as well.

Very interesting concept. There is a bit of a risk involved, because what if the player decides he doesn't like the new team (or something else comes up), and he doesn't re-sign with them? Plus, it's not like it's a legal agreement that either side will re-sign after the first year, so all you have is somebody's "word".

Lundkvist is going to be our Swedish Zubov. Except we aren't going to trade him after 2 1/2 years.

Yeah, I heard the same thing on the drive into work.

It's an interesting concept. I guess teams will always find new ways to circumvent the CBA, but honestly, I don't see this one as being that bad, mostly for the reasons you mentioned. There is risk involved for both the player and clubs in engaging in it, so I don't think it will be over used. And honestly, if a team signs you, outlays the cash for one year, then you are that team's property, so they have the right to get that little extra boost of giving the 8th year.

Creative idea by the Leafs potentially, but I don't see it as a major abuse of the system.

Ton of risk for the player. What if he gets injured during that 1 year deal?

Yeah, I agree, I don't think it will be abused per se. But it's amazing, what ways these guys think of to gain any advantage.

... But first re-sign Peter Nedved, and then trade him and Lundkvist (the Swedish Zubov), to reacquire this time, assistant coach Ulf Samuelsson, along with "Lucky" Luc Robitaille, from whatever "over 50 men's league" team they may now be part of somewhere.

Funny, you mention Zubov, because some of the pundits were comparing Dahlin to him over the weekend. Dahlin has been compared to like every great defensemen ever.

Lucky Luc was not very lucky with us. I know he didn't join a great team when he came here, but his production literally cut in 1/2.

When is the word, "LUCKY", ever associated with the Rangers? Luc was referred to as that due to his days playing with the Kings and Penguins. With the Rangers, well maybe you & I would be called "Lucky", if we were able to play for them at one point.

Arthur Staple of The Athletic reports that the 4 other teams besides the Isles in the battle for Tavares are the Leafs, Sharks, Stars, and the Bruins.

I don't think Tavares is dumb enough to take a 1 year deal. If he gets seriously injured, he's risking losing tens of millions of dollars. It's a way to circumvent not being able to get the 8th year on deal, but it's a super-risky one.
