Mark Paul: Florida Panthers Trading Partners (Ottawa Senators) The Florida Panthers have stated publicly that they're looking to make a big splash in the off-season. This is the second part in a league-wide search for great potential trading partners for the Panthers. Today we will look at the Ottawa Senators.

To Florida Panthers
Mike Hoffman (LW)

To Ottawa Senators
15th overall pick in 2018
Alex Petrovic (D)
Aleksi Heponiemi (C)

This, uh...seems like a pretty large overpayment for Mike Hoffman....no?

A first, third, Ian Cole and Filip Gustavsson for Derrick Brassard.

A first, (essentially a second round pick), and Alex Petrovic for Mike Hoffman.

You could be right that Ottawa would need to send something additional in terms of draft picks along with Hoffman. I would say Cole's better than Petrovic though. I can get on board that it may be slightly tipped in Ottawa's favor, but i dunno about a large overpayment.

Just seems like Heponiemi is probably the, and please correct me if I'm wrong, Panthers' 3rd-best prospect...behind Tippett/Borgstrom, no? If not #3 then I would have to imagine he's top-5. I know he's a tad undersized but his point production the last two years has been excellent.

Maybe I'm overrating Petrovic a bit, but it just seems like a 1st, a top prospect, and a 4/5 defenseman is a bit pricey for a guy who has never hit (but obviously come very close, I admit I'm nitpicking a little here) 30g or 60pts. Especially when you consider that it's entirely possible that in a few years Tippett could be putting up those kind of numbers without having to give up any assets.

I'd be interested in seeing what you'd offer for Pacioretty then!

I think it's pricey for Hoffman. I believe the need for Ottawa to send dollars out isn't being evaluated here.

Ottawa is a tire fire with their owner right now. He's publicly stated he wants to have less payroll. Means that 1st round pick likely goes to 2019 and is top 10 protected? Or it's a couple 2nd round picks if possible.

Florida:

Hoffman

Ottawa:
2018 2nd round pick
2019 3rd round pick
Petrovic

Fill in the obligatory additonal late round picks as needed.

I'll admit, I'd prefer to use the 15th overall pick and Heponiemi to trade for a defenseman. But Hoffman is a good top six forward and to acquire one with term you have to give up something pretty significant, especially when it's not a roster player but everything is based on potential at that point.

I can't see Ottawa give away Hoffman for less than a first round pick. Petrovic is a 5/6 d-man so his value is limited. And while Ottawa is looking to re-adjust their payroll, they aren't going to give guys away just for the sake of doing so.

Bobby Ryan is the real wild card here. If they can figure out a way to even unload half of his salary to someone and eat the rest, that'd be a win.

I guess since the Canucks traded Florida a first round pick for Gudbranson it's only fair right?

He's the only player on Ottawa I'd feel good about trading away firsts...I'm wondering if a trade to Montreal for Drouin is ever gonna be explored

Sens aren't trading Chabot for a first round pick that's 15th overall. Next years Florida pick will likely be in the same spot or better, not happening. The defense is going to be atrocious if Karlsson leaves, getting rid of Chabot makes no sense.

Habs just traded for Drouin, and have him signed. Despite Sergachev's excellent looking play in Tampa, I don't see them trading away a highly skilled French Canadian player.

Patches on the otherhand...

Despite the ownership being a mess, the Sens aren't going to give Hoffman away for nothing. He's actually signed to a decent contract. Another team would assuredly offer more than that.

yeah, i feel like the 1st proposal was on the right track.

1st, prospect and a meh roster player.

#15 and Heponiemi would be a real strong offer. not sure if would be that good.

I don't think too many people would have a problem giving up a first round pick for Erik Karlsson, Mark Stone or Matt Duchene (assuming he signs an extension).

It's Hard to this article seriously when you make wrong and inaccurate statements when evaluating the opposing team's players.

You said Mark stone is 25 years old and cost controlled for an additional 3 years.

Fact is;

He turns 26 in 10 days and is R.F.A this summer, only 1 year away from U.F.A. status.
