Expect to hear:
1. Difficult market to move in (code for nuthin to sell, nuthin to buy)
2. Series of unfortunate circumstances (CC)
3. We like our core (we have to because we can't trade any of them)
4. We have some good young pieces (it's going to be a while to rebuild)
5. Focus is on developing youth and creating space to add pieces (it's going to be a while to rebuild) - Return of the Roar
Add to #4
especially when we keep giving those young pieces away |

Getting a first for Hartman is a steal for this team. Hartman may have success elsewhere but he was producing next to nothing on the team this year.
I was not expecting the dust to settle on this deadline and have the Hawks with an extra 1st. Was thinking maybe a 2nd to make up the gap but this is refreshing.
Wingels will likely resign in the offseason, Hartman is due for a raise. Things are looking a little better today. |

Bolts in it to win it, that might just do it. Yzerman finally makes a move to solidify his teams chances of winning a cup. |

I think you're in the minority on this one. Hartman was all over the place this year. I would have liked to keep him for next season, but to get a first, swap a 5th to a 4th, and get a big centerman who's doing well in Sweden's top league is pretty good for a return. |

@MarkLazerus
Wingels to Bruins for conditional fifth-rounder in 2019. Wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see Wingels return to Chicago next season.
@MarkLazerus
The pick becomes a fourth-rounder if Bruins advance past the first round of this year's playoffs, or if the Bruins re-sign Wingels.

On the NHL Network Trade Day ticker it was listed that the Bruins had acquired Wingels from the Sens. |

Gonna use a baseball analogy (probably not applicable) here to rationalize moving Hartman:
In baseball, for the development of the modern day analytical/sabermetrics-driven world, a player has a WAR. That’s WAR is not only defined by how that player performs at the plate/bases, but how he does in the field. If a player is a terrific hitter but a horrendous fielder, his WAR could be between 0.0-1.00 (league average-slight above average). If a player is poor at both relative to the rest of the league, he’s a negative WAR player.
In Hartman’s case, regardless of his physical intangibles and how many times he was able to showcase some of his abilities, his boneheaded penalties absolutely hurt his team/value. For the effort he brings/the intangibles/his skill, until he’s able to play smarter, his value will continue to be hindered rather than reaching max potential.
The talent is there for him to develop into a useful everyday top-six forward. But until that does, he remained a bottom-six one with upside. To me, regardless of his current situation with the team/Q/rest of the roster, from a value perspective, this was a great one and it would have been foolish of Bowman to turn it down.
Look at what Tatar/E. Kane fetched today. For the upside that Hartman may have, it’s rather evident that he’s worse than either of those players RIGHT NOW, and he got a similar haul as them.
I don’t always give StanBo credit, but he deserves accolades for this move. |

A 1st, albeit, probably a lower one is a great return for Hartman who truly has regressed this year. Lets also not forget how bad he was vs Nashville last year in the playoffs....1 of many who was a non show, which makes it even more puzzling Preds paid that high of a price for him.
Bowman did well accumulating some picks. Now this summer he needs to dig deeper and trade some players who will fetch monster returns.
The window is closed. I wonder what 19 would fetch on a draft day trade......... |

Reporter tried to ask SB if Joel was the guy to turn it around next year and he backed him up, saying it's not just on Joel and basically only the young guys have been doing their jobs. |

How about the fact it would be great to have a tenacious veteran winger to play on our fourth line? A kid who plays with everything he has? You need players like Wingels to win. He was the LAST of the problems the Hawks had.
Unless they call up Hayden, the Hawks may be the first team in NHL history to NOT be credited for a legal body check in their next game. |

When the Preds win the cup, that pick will become #31, which up until Vegas came along would have been a 2nd round pick. Hartman is only 23 and is likely already a better NHL player than the Swedish giant (22 years old) will ever be. The whole team regressed this year and the coach is a joke.

Hartman was a 30th overall pick. It was a fine return. Pretty much unanimous across most opinions. |

I honestly don't know how the Hawks will ever replace Hartsy's 10 goals and 40 dumb penalty minutes.
Hawks got a futures deal here. They traded a bottom 6 winger with propensity for dumb penalties. The prospect is doing quite well in the Swedish elite league and the extra first gives the team another shot at another prospect or a potential to trade up in the draft.
To get a chance at Dahlin or Tkachuk (sp) I'd move Hartman in a NY minute. |
