James, nice job on the rink but I will take my Florida 80 degree weather in February.

The Caps really need to make a good hockey trade and bolster the defense. The defense has been bad as you have stated. They need to make a trade that brings in an experienced d man with term. No rental will do as they will be back to square one next year if they go this route and then there is still the chance they don't sign Carlson. (Although, odds are they will and ante up the big $$$ and an 8 year deal). Again no rental, a d man with term is required ASAP.

"Oh but Beagle starts most of his shifts in the D zone!" Yeah? So does John Carlson and (if you haven't noticed) he is kind of awesome. Carlson racks up the points, limits shots, and has a positive possession rating relative to his team. Lots of players get defensive zone starts and are effective - they are not an excuse for being terrible.

.... actually Beagle's D zone starts (75%) are significantly higher than Carlson's (52%).

What kind of Money is Carlson looking for? I assume the max 8 years, but will it be north of 8M?

Caps are in a pickle ( they can't replace him). He's going to get a max term from any team and then it becomes a question of dollars. North of 8mil per is excessive but it's all relative to market conditions. If the Caps can hammer out a deal soon it will be under 8 mil for 8 years. I didn't go out on a limb here. He's going to be in high demand. He's not anywhere near as good as Mike Green was back in the day but then again he doesn't come with a reputation for inadequate defense. Although, I think he measures up in average at best on defense.

Caps need to do two things.

#1. Beef up their D a bit to support Holtby more.
#2. Get Ovi on a big scoring roll. When he is scoring the team plays well all around.

No kidding. Carlson's numbers are insane. And 8 M won't look to bad after Karlsson and Doughty sign max contracts the following season. No doubt Carlson will be the top UFA D man this offseason. Maybe a deal can be made to keep him. Devs have a ton of cap space and are in desperate need of a decent backup. Grubauer could be packaged with Orpik to free up north of 6M next season. They likely cant afford Grubs next season either.

Ya who cares about accuracy when you can just throw crap on a wall and see what sticks!
That 75% "D" zone starts are tops on the Caps BTW Tanner!
