Very interesting interview! There are many folks completely over the top with hockey analytics. There are others that use it as another important tool in the toolbox. The player's perspective cannot be discarded. To me, instead of being used to judge a player as "good or bad", analytics present great coaching and player improvement opportunities. I think if you over-rely them to select your roster, you are in trouble.

Analytics are just boring. I think that’s why a lot of old schoolers like myself don’t like them. I’m sure they help coaches GMs and players, but when every single article of hockey is just plastered with numbers and percentages it just gets boring. I have numbers in my head all day, I don’t need to decipher a chart when I read about hockey. Lazy journalism as well in my opinion.

I'm a math guy, so the analytics stuff doesn't phase me at all. But Corsi in particular accounts for a pretty small slice of the variance of a game's results or an individual player's performance. More simply put, it has some explanatory power, but not much.

Shout-out to Sheng, eh? Between his excellent player interviews and rockin' video analysis, he's the best f'n blogger here by far.

Great read. It opens up a lot of questions in regards to the use of the stats. Anything can be overanalyzed and everything needs to be taken with context.

Really interesting interview. Keep up the good work.

David Perron brings up some really good points and offers a different perspective on a lot of this stuff. A good read.

It's pretty cool how many interviews he seems to get with players. I don't know if they are more accessible in Las Vegas or if he has just gained the player's trust/respect there. Makes his blogs a lot more interesting though.

What a 3rd period tonight against Chicago. Perron with a nice one to make it 4-2 as well. Man Vegas is just a fantastic group playing a strong system. They just all buy in and wear you down.

...and it doesn't appear - even with growing organizational emphasis on analytics - that NHL teams have anywhere near the reliance on them that the blogosphere does.

Great read and interview Sheng. Perron has become one of my favorite players to watch on this team.

Also I guess next time you’re at practice, watch out for nosebleeds. Altitude difference can be huge

Thanks for all the kind words, guys! They're much appreciated.

I can't say if I get more access in Vegas than in other cities, but I do try really hard to ask the players more different questions. Hopefully, some of them have noticed and respect that. Sometimes, I stump them a bit haha.
