Obviously on the high end, but, well, Julien Gauthier hasn't adapted well early, and we need somebody to help NOW.

Ok... and while Dion isn’t worth 7 a year... he’s still decent. But if I’m Carolina I would rather go for Pacioretty than Duchene. I know Duchene is a C but he’s overrated.

He has an incredibly cheap contract for a guy who puts in 30+ goals per year. You MIGHT get him for that, but odds are that the Habs would be able to find more from a contending team elsewhere.

I brought it up before, Moving Alex Burrows, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Zack Smith, even Derrick Brassard will alleviate some of the salary crunch. Right now, the Sens need to make room for the next year or two to resign the core guys you mentioned. Moving players who are serviceable but too costly for the roles they provide will help since you can’t move Dion or Bobby right now. It would also be nice to cut ties with Condon and Thompson. All of the above names could be replaced by AHLers in the interim.

If you are able to squeeze for the next season or two (with the cap increasing), you can then maybe move Dion in his final year at least.

It really comes down to what Eugene is going to force Dorion to do.

Both Bobby Ryan and Phaneuf have some serious value at a 5-6 million salary cap hit. That's not a lot of retained money to ensure you can keep your entire core going forward. And you would be able to get pieces in return that could actually help in the future.
I'd love to see Ryan in a Flames jersey.
What would it cost to get these guys if say, 1.25 million annually was retained?

Unless Ryan and Dion have off ice issues, I don’t see Eugene wanting to take on any extra salary/costs for guys that don’t play in Ottawa. It sucks. Would ease the problem significantly.

Phaneuf with more than 25% retained would be attractive to alot of teams.

Personally, I think Dorion is far more likely to trade the likes of Hoffman, Brassard, and Smith before dealing with the mess of trying to move Ryan or Phaneuf. In fact, I think it's lunacy to consider trading from the blue line, because right now they don't even have a 4th d-man playing more than 17min/gp, which is clear evidence of just how badly they assessed their blue line situation heading into the season. Meanwhile, they spend more on forwards than any other team in the league, despite being bottom-5 in both goals scored and PP% (with the benefit of having possibly the best offensive d-man in the world).

At the end of the day, there has to be a long-term vision for the team... which at this point would seem to be most effectively built around Karlsson, Stone, and Duchene, plus the key young players like Chabot, White, Brown, and whatever other decent young assets they might be able to get back in trade. They also need to stop screwing around with the basic concept of finding a quality defence partner for Karlsson, because that situation is just not going to resolve itself with the current pieces available.

Last year's anomaly season is killing the Sens. They were a very poor team that somehow over-achieved and made an eastern conference final. So they proceeded to give up legit young assets to acquire Burrows and Duchene because they were thinking like an eastern conference contender, when in fact they were a bottom-feeder

No one is taking Dion without Ottawa eating a considerable chunk of salary. And NO ONE is taking Ryan...period. Easily the worst contract in hockey (history?). If Ottawa was stacked with young prospects, they could attach one of them to Ryan in order to entice a team like Arizona or Buffalo, but the farm system is pretty weak. So that's not an option. And there's no way Dorion would EVER give up his first round pick in the Rasmus Dahlin draft (wait....he already did??? Je$us....)

Anyways, bottom line - don't overreact to success in the standings. Look deeper - this team was terrible last year! And due to a series of missteps, Karlsson is gonna walk, and they have no first-round pick and a relatively weak prospect pool to kick off their rebuild

You are all forgetting the bad contracts the leafs took to get phaneuf. So his contract isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be

Trade Smith and Burrows to get immediate relief.

The farm system is not that weak. We have some good young prospects who played well in the junior tournament. If we bet a high enough pick to grab Dahlin we get to keep it fyi, and Burrows was acquired last year at the deadline before we got hot. The main Difference between last year's run and this years woes is goaltending. You can try and discredit last year's playoff run All you want but as a Sens fan it was amazing and I'm sure you'd love to experience something like that as a leafs fan. Everyone clicked and karlsson took his game to another level and you don't take the Stanley cup champions to overtime game 7 with a terrible team. You don't know for sure he's gonna walk, anything is possible, but there's just as must chance he signs.
