Pens got smoked. That young Carolina D is turning into something special. They kept the Pens in their own zone all night, only backing off when the Pens were coming in numbers. When the Pens did get into the zone almost everything was blocked and the pressure was relentless.

In Sullivan's post game press conference, he indicated that the 6 defensemen were not participating in the rush the way the coaches want or the way the team's system is designed.

He basically indicated that the defense can play better defense if they play better offense. The Pens are designed that offense and to some degree goal tending win hockey games and win playoff hockey games.

I think Sullivan wants some strong changes to the defensive personnel.

I beleive 2 of the 5 of the following will be traded in the next 2 weeks.
Hunwick, Cole, Maatta, Letang, Hagelin.

By the trade deadline, we will have a different defense including at least one new top 4 defenseman.

For those interested, some insight into the Canes new owner.

Hurricanes have gone 5-1-1 since Dundon took the players (And players only) to TopGolf in Nashville and had a brainstorming session with them about what he can do to help them be more successful.

My big takeaway from this blog is there are more "sellers" than I thought.

9 teams are sitting with 20% or less odds of making the playoffs.
coyotes
sabres
senators
canucks
red wings
canadians
oilers
panthers
avalanche

Rutherford may not have an abundance of assets to trade away, but there are more than enough teams to deal with/available players.

I actually feel bad for you. You have absolutely nobody to talk about the canes with on here. It's a shame since you see to be really into them

I get a few folks now and then, but yeah.

There are quite a few lurkers, but without a canes blog they stay pretty quiet.

I’ve been watching the Penguins and I see their struggles. I don’t see how adding Kane and Girgensons makes us bad in the short term or the long-term. Same reason why I don’t want to let go of Rust or Sheary if we don’t have to. I’m by no means saying that we’re going to become cup favorites with these moves, but I think it gets us closer to that conversation. Did anyone have Ottawa going as far as they did last year? No. Sometimes things just work out. I’m just advocating my opinion, we’ll see which direction management takes
- WSCTeton17

I think getting Kane and Girgensons would make the Pens much better. My concern on Kane is his injuries and outside of hockey issues with the injuries being the bigger concern. As i stated above, I believe the Pens are also going for changes on the D side. I like Ristolainen, but I know BUF will not give him up.

My question is, as always, how do you plan on outbidding your opponents for Kane?

Other teams have more to offer and, honestly, you're in 22nd place in the NHL right now.

I'd trade all of those mentioned, except Maatta.

I was just responding to WSCTeton17, who suggested Hornqvist, Hagelin, and a 1st for Kane and Girgs. I'm not sure BUF would go for that, they would probably want younger prospects along with the 1st, but I would do the trade if there was something else in place to improve the D for the Pens to make a Cup run this year!

I threw Maatta in there because to get an improvement to the D, you might have to give up something that would actually improve your top 3D.

Letang is our strongest trade chip, he's a more expense Schultz at this point.

My proposal was predicated on the fact that Hornqvist also has value. So in return for Kane/Girgs buffalo gets Pens 1st, Hagelin, and whatever they trade Horny for to a team like St.Louis or one of the California teams. Based off past years, I would say Hornqvist is worth a 1st+. So you're getting 2 1sts, a 2 time cup winner who's only good at killing penalties right now, and whatever else you get for Hornqvist. I'd say that's a pretty good return. What other cup contender is going to offer two 1sts+? Maybe St.Louis, Columbus, or LA. I really don't know
Side note, it's nice to see the Canes succeeding. Francis has done a great job over there. He's stuck with Peters and has had a couple draft picks fall into place. Combine that with trades for guys like TT and things have really come together nicely

All 4 players could use a change of scenery.

You know Bergevin would do that in a heartbeat.

If we're blowing things up, we gotta find a way to get Petry back too or our defense would be ....yikes

That'd be like a 6 player trade...now theres your blockbuster.

Definitely want Petry coming back. It's just such an odd deal. I think Bergevin would do it as well, I don't think we would want to
