4 points out of a playoff spot on December 16th doesn't sound like a lot, but sadly, it is. When you factor in the need to pass 2 teams in the Metro and all the likely 3 point games between those clubs, making up a 4 point difference is harder than it looks.
It's far from impossible, but the Flyers will need to stay healthy and probably pick up a minimum of 61-64 points in their last 51 games to get that last spot.
No true Philadelphian would waste a soft pretzel like that, besides, batteries have a much better chance of actually knocking the refs out!
edit: this post in no way endorses throwing any objects onto the playing surface. However, if you hit Dale Weise and put him on LTIR, well, no one will really be that upset.

I'll be very impressed if they can pull that off.

Yeah, 94 points could get them in and each point more improves those chances. They can absolutely do it as they are just 1.5 games out at the moment with lots of time left. They can't fall back any as those 3 point games makes it tougher to catch up but I expect this team to play better as the season rolls on which should translate into increased point production.

Helps they have a lot of metro games left. Makes the road a little more direct. Notice I didn't say easier.

The key will be staying healthy. They just don't have the depth to withstand any key injuries right now. Looking at the Metro, I think Washington and Columbus are sure bets to be in and I just can't see the Pens not finding a way to make it. That means the Flyers will have to pass at least two of the Rags, Isles or Devils to make it. Gonna be tough, doable, but tough.

Yeah, the lack of depth and not being able to get out of slumps for too long are the two issues for the Flyers. They can't withstand another slump and make it. I think this team is as good as or better than the Fishsticks and the Rags are a team in decline. I haven't seen enough of the Devils but they're getting results.
I don't pay much attention to games in hand, you still have to win those games for it to matter. - BiggE
I agree. I think it goes to what you alluded to earlier. With the points system in the league, you're further behind than it seems. Although I think the basic premise of even with the 10 game losing streak they're not by any means out of it.
Neither does the current format for calculating the standings. If you're a point behind a team but have four games in hand, it seems silly to me to list them lower in the standings.

Sure it does, it's a points based system. You can't give a team points that haven't been earned. They could lose all 4 games.
Then you would need to come up with a formula that gets that result. - fls13
No formula is needed. The NHL standings are the NHL standings. That's what I go by. The point is that according to past history, 3 point games are a much bigger influence on the standings ultimately than games in hand which will fluctuate up and down and eventually even up.
