Kinda like the Oil and Avs take turns losing?
Makes sense, bring Kane in! If nothing else, he'll keep the casinos in business |

Congrats, the Flames are 6 points better than the Avs but have played 2 more games.
youre a minus -6 in goals differential, avs are -4.
Youre playing equal to the Avs....not a good look for the Flames after giving up 9 draft picks in the past 2 years for 3 Dmen and a goalie. |

but somehow they have a 1st and prospect for kane.
would be zero picks in the first 2 rounds for the next 2 years if they do it. |

The Flames have the 8th best farm system according to The Hockey Writers. Sure they don't have a lot of high end draft picks the next couple years but you can't discount the fact that they have good players in their system. |

James Tanner writes for them, so take their rankings with a grain of salt |

I have no idea how you can make the argument that the Flames have played better than their record.
They're still in the hunt because Gaudreau was the best player in the league through 20 games and Smith was the best goalie. They had three lines doing next to nothing during that stretch. They're lucky to be where they are in the standings right now.
The rest of the team have definitely stepped up recently, but now Gaudreau isn't doing much. If they can ever get everyone rolling at once, they're a scary good team. |

Sure. I can also look at the AHL standings and see the Flames Farm team has the 4th best winning % in a 30 team league. |

not every teams prospects play in the AHL. NCAA, Euro, etc. Not saying that the Flames dont have a nice collection of prospects
But AHL success doesn't instantly translate to that, other factors come into play |

I agree. The Flames have nice pieces outside the AHL as well. All I'm saying is that they already have some good prospects in the system so I'm not all that surprised that they found draft picks expendable. |

thats just silly, draft picks are not expendable. Never are.
Flames feel like they can win now and not wait for the future, I get it, on paper it seems there so they smelled blood in the water and went for it
You can never have enough draft picks or prospects bc every teams "gems" of prospects dont always turn out. |

no but more bullets in the gun for pro long success. You won succeed in this league if your team is build from UFA signings and trades.
Look at the Oilers, |

Draft picks are a form of currency, just like the players on the team. The market dictates the value. Flames obviously feel good about the value that is in the pipeline, no doubt they have had discussions on what they could get for who. They gave up value in other areas as a result. Like I said, its not that surprising. |

Right. Exactly why you can never have enough. I'm sure they feel good about their current pipeline and have they every right to but that doesn't mean they should drain their future pipeline. If the promising players don't turn out the way they should then they have nothing to fall back on. While it's not surprising that they would be dishing out some picks there's no reason for any team to dish out too many because, like you said, draft picks are similar to a form of currency. |
