A great defensive player, with some snarl and well above average offensive skill like Doughty, or the best offensive Dman with good defensive play like Karlsson?

I gotta say, I'm probably in the minority but I'd lean Doughty.

Feels like a trap game. We should win, they have a ton of injuries......and then we lay an egg. (hopefully not!) If we put a solid 60 into tonight's game we should be victorious. Go Devils!

Both have won a Norris so really no wrong choice. But in terms of points per game for D-men playing at least 250 games, Karlsson is like 6th all time right now. He's been nothing short of great. And he still on the right side of 30.

Karlsson and it's not even close for me. Karlsson is one of the best defensemen of all time.

That said, the ankle stuff worries me down the road. Long term I'd probably go Hedman.

It's still early, but to be fair Pietrangelo is having an absolutely monster year.

What I think is a good defenseman and what others think is a good defenseman, and who I think is truly a #1 guy is best characterized with two players.

Erik Karlsson from 2015-2016, and Erik Karlsson from 2016-2017.

Erik Karlsson from 2016-2017 was a true #1 defenseman. It's not because of the change in his +/-, it's because of the passion he exuded. It only "reflected" in his +/-. He was better in his own end because he added grit to his game.
