Duff can't. He can only embrace what Holland tells him he can embrace.#paidpuppet

It's the number of shots I now drink during Wings games.

Big D, shot clock is how many lefts Mantha throws before his right appears!

That close, the fists should be shown the light of day & start punching their way to another win.

Pretty goal by AA... too bad it was wasted by this team's terrible defense. Gonna be a long season... The tank begins whether Holland likes it or not. Bring on the rebuild.

Y'know, we all complain about the quote-heavy, newspaper writing style, but it's the lazy, uncritical use of sports radio level cliches and narratives that really drive me nuts. At best they fluff up a piece without actually saying anything meaningful, but more often they're just wrong and/or perpetuate an intellectually lazy approach to the game.

I'm just going to take one example here, but Bob's blogs are frequently littered with these.

Just as the top pitchers in baseball find a way to be successful when they don’t have their best stuff at their disposal, the good teams find a way to nail the lid tight on nights where they get ahead minus their A game.

You think the Wings of a decade ago would have allowed this one to slip from their grasp? Not a chance.

Those of us who actually take time to build cases based on evidence and data are careful not to make easily disprovable statements like this. The Red Wings team of "a decade ago" was the 2007-08 squad -- which, as you'll recall, was the consensus best team in the league, won the President's Trophy with 115 points, then won the Stanley Cup. Surely, they would have never let a game slip away if they had been leading after two or had held a 2-goal lead at any point, right?

Well, actually they did. At least six times, in fact.

10/6/2007 vs Chicago - Wings broke out to a 2-0 lead and were up 3-1 going into the third. Ended regulation tied 3-3 and lost in a shootout.

10/12/2007 vs Chicago - Wings shot out to a 2-0 lead after one, but gave up two in the second and one in the third to lose 3-2.

11/13/2007 vs St. Louis - Wings again close the first period up 2-0, but surrender 4 in the second and eventually lose 4-3.

11/17/2007 vs Chicago - Wings up 3-2 after two, but surrender 3 unanswered in the third to lose 5-3.

12/20/2007 vs St. Louis - Wings allow the first goal but score two in the second to lead 2-1 going into the third. St. Louis adds two more to win 3-2 in regulation.

2/7/2008 vs Los Angeles - Wings up 3-1 after two, but get shelled in the third and lose 5-3.

"But those are good teams!" I hear you cry. Actually, it's hard to remember now, but in 2007-2008 they all stunk. Chicago missed the playoffs, St. Louis had the fourth worst record in the league, and LA finished in last.

It's not like it took me forever to pull these games, either. Even if you don't have a tool to automate the search, you can scan the game logs yourself and do it manually in 10-15 minutes.

Yes, last night's loss was depressing. Yes it sucks to give up a lead. Yes, every point is crucial if you're trying to squeak into the playoffs. But spare me the crap about how only bad teams blow leads or how good teams "find a way to win." All teams blow third period leads from time to time, even the really good ones. But it's easy to forget that when you rely on your memory and emotions rather than, you know, the data.

When the Wings miss the playoffs, you can blame the couple of games where they got outplayed all night, then only managed to steal one point instead of two. Personally, I think all the times they got skunked after never being in the game in the first place is the bigger problem.

EDIT: Before anyone beats me to it:

The most annoying thing about Duff is how he talks down to Wings fans like we're all stupid. Granted, there are many Wings fans who lack hockey knowledge and think the NHL started in 1997. But for the most part, we know more than he does.

A while ago he told us on this blog that we shouldn't expect the Wings to compete for a Stanley Cup this season. Really, Bob? You just needed to tell us that? Give me a break. 😂

His so called "articles" are mere puff pieces built on meaningless quotes. No actual insight of his own. He's one of Kenny's paid puppets like HSJ is.

But we all know this.

Sounds like Duff and the Avs Mike Chambers were born twins from the same woeful womb...

(I can't stand Chambers, he's a tool) I saw the game from both TV stations.

Red Wings TV Station: "Athenesiou's goal left the goalie's jockstrap in the rafters." Colorado is improved but the Red Wings should have the 2 points"

Avalanche TV Station: Mike Haynes goes nuts when the Avs tie the game and when Mackinnon scores in OT.

Bottom line is this, between the teams there's no rivalry anymore but the announcers on both sides clearly put their spin on how bad the other team is and there's a sense of bias. It's like they're all stuck 20 years ago.

Yeah the rivalry has been dead for a long time now. Likely since before the 04-05 lockout. During the game yesterday, Mickey Redmond says "the Wings are playing so well right now." 😂 They were outplayed by the Avs from start to finish. They blew a 2 goal lead with 6 minutes left to an Avs team which played in Nashville the night before. "Boy oh boy. Wow. Look at that gang."

Oh my goodness. How old is he now? lol. Avs can't beat Nashville, it's been a few years. With the Avs and Wings in recent years they usually split the series.

I've been listening to the Mick since I was a kid. He must be 70 by now. 😂
