Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks take one step back with lackluster loss to Golden Knights The Vancouver Canucks' return to Rogers Arena was a disappointment as they managed just 21 shots in a 5-2 loss to the expansion Vegas Golden Knights.

Thanks Carol.

That game was uhg-ly!!
Never seen so many whiff shots or pucks bouncing over sticks. It was last year's deja-vu all over again.

The ice is supposed to be getting better now, too. After a super-busy stretch of concerts on off-days, the schedule at Rogers Arena now lightens up considerably for the rest of the year.

TY Carol,

The 6 game eastern road trip next week should be interesting.

I dont disagree with Ray in that the Canucks have to be at their best to win many games this year. Vegas is probably equally as talented, but they were going hard all game. They were fun to watch and are fast on all lines, really showing how Canucks need more of it

I do toss some blame on the coach in this one as well. If someone told me Willie was on the bench for this one, I'd believe them. Nilsson not starting, the awful line combinations, the usage of players and Dorsett being the extra attacker (with Sven/Boeser available) are things Willie was heavily criticized for

Hey, it could have been Megna or Chaput!

He was also up against a good coach last night.

Hopefully he figures it out sooner than later.

He's still learning how to coach at this level.

Top 5 pick

If given the choice to shuffle lines, Gagner definitely needs to watch a game or two from the pressbox. Vanek might be invisible for stretches, but he's still producing. Gaunce, Granlund, Gagner could all sit if you want to give others a chance IMO

the 2017 equivalent?

I know there is still a lot of love for Green, but I really thought I'd come home and see some people ripping the decision. Down 2 goals, pulling the goalie and you have Sutter, Dorsett, Gagner and Vanek as your 4 forwards

It was 3-2 when Bo-Boeser line had their 2nd last shift, was already 5-2 for their final one

Granlund is definitely being punished with less ice time cause of his play. Heard he only had 2 shifts on the 2nd half of the 2nd period. Can we sit 9 players due to poor play?

punishing young players and not vets for indifferent play doesn't cut it with me.

And it's not going to get easier when your up against guys like AV on the road next week.

I'm indifferent on Green, I hear he's good at developing players. As long as that happens i'm not really hard up for W's right now.

Cant wait till these old farts are gone, might take a few years but ya a few more top picks isn't a bad thing.

I was pretty open minded on Green, particularly because he was being widely regarded as a good developer. So far though I see minimal difference between him and Willie in regards to: a go-to goalie, reliance on vets, poor line combinations, and short leash for kids

they can play poorly, all I ask for is effort as we know the talent level is not great. Just show up, actually play the first period, and work hard; its less difficult to watch

I see differences for sure.

- Vet ice time has decreased/varied much more (especially the Sedins).
- The line combos are part Sedin (again) and also not having great talent to choose from. TG has stated he looks to set pairs, so Sedins, Horvat + Baert, Sutter + DD, Ganger + Vanek seem to be them. The other parts are the rotating ones.
- Short leash, I'm guessing JV takes up most of that. It's easy for us from the outside to look down and say that, but we don't know what he's saying to them in meetings and practice, and what they're not delivering on.

The last one sort of goes along the lines of the development. We talk about how much JV has changed over the last year in his development with Utica, but TG was treating him the same down there when he was making those strides. It's just under a larger spotlight up here as they're both in the (sh!t)show now.

Edit: though, to be fair, I haven't fully watched the last couple games due to the late starts. From all accounts it seems like they're trending back to WD games. I'll give TG some more slack as we're just under 1/4 of the way through, but you have to wonder if the past three coaches have been doing similar things, if it's not them but what they're working with more so. I do agree with the Markstrom and DD points, though.. tough to sit on those!
