I could still argue this is Dale Tallon's team , i'm sick of hearing how good of a gm Stan Bowman is .... sure he has three cups , but that's riding off the pieces and moves assembled by the previous gm.

They had plenty of luck. I think Keith was more about good drafting/development and less about luck. However They got very lucky with Kane and saw the Pens draft J. Staal instead of Toews. Instead of Kane/Toews, they easily could have wound up with vanRiemsdyk/J. Staal or Turris/Staal.

Not surprising at all, the death nail was Kane's contract. You can have 1 10+ million dollar player, but not two. If they'd have moved out Kane, they would still have Panarin and Hjallmarsson. Not to mention the sweet haul of youth they would have gotten for Kane.

Toews is the guy that's massively overpaid

Even his touted "defensive game" was probably 50% Hossa.....

When the team started getting hints that Toews was expecting 10+ million per on his next deal thats when Bowman shoulda been picking up the phone.....

If that would of been done they would still be cup contender, instead they are scrambling for a playoff spot. Move Seabs and Toews and we might be elite again - problem is finding a team to take on these contracts even if you get little or nothing in return.

You wouldn't find at team now with either of those contracts, without retaining some $$$

but the Haul would have been Massive if it was in the last year of their previous deal

NHL teams need to be more like the Patriots. Belichick moves everyone and anyone with the exception of Brady when the cost outweighs the value (keep in mind Brady also only makes about 15 million per year when the market for scrub QB's is 20 million)

It is very easy to undo mistakes in the NFL. The NHL...not so much. Bowman did what so many other GMs have done - reward players past performance by signing them to a max contract. One of these is ok. The Hawks have 2 and it will likely become a bigger problem for them as the years go by.
