I miss the days when you covered the Flyers beat, Jay. You had that rare ability to both inform and amuse!

Keep up the good work!!

Cesare Maniago?!?! I never thought I’d ever hear that name again! This guy sure knows his hockey!!

Too bad most of the readers on HB won’t aporeciate the talent and knowledge of Jay.

For what it’s worth, great post!!!

The 1994 Rangers appropriately made the ballot with the epic seven-game double overtime thriller over the Devils–after Mark Messier delivered a guarantee and a hat trick in Game Six–and then appropriately again for outlasting the Canucks in seven games for the greatest night in New York’s long hockey history.

The entire 1994 playoffs was the greatest moment in NHL history. Yes, moments can last 2 months because it's hockey.

I hate the Rangers and wish them and their entire fanbase nothing but mental anguish and suffering for eternity. That said, that 1994 Oilers Rangers team was a blast to watch, and I was totally rooting for them.

Murray Craven was on that Vancouver team. I was rooting for them. There were 15 series in that playoffs and 7 went 7. Of course, the Rags-Debs conference finals was the best series I've ever seen.

Having watched the ‘79 Game Seven game on TV, in southern NH surrounded by Bruins fans (except my dad), I (with all due bias, not going to try to hide it ) concur with your notion that it should rank as the greatest moment in NHL history—especially for the collective look of disbelief and, shortly afterwards, depression on the Bruins fans’ faces. Obviously open to debate re: Habs win, I also agree with your view of the “Orr goal” as highly overrated (but among the best sports photos ever taken, of that there is no doubt).

If I were to pick a non-“homer” moment (in my lifetime, so going back to the first modern expansion in ‘67), I’d have to go with M-A Fleury’s save in the dying moments of the 2009 final to preserve the one-goal lead and win the Cup. (I’m no fan of either the team or the player, but it was a spectacular moment to see).

That Yzerman overtime goal was pretty special.

Orr scored, THEN dove. Nothing all that impressive about the actual goal

People see the photo and talk about it like he dove and was airborne as he put the puck into the net

All it was was a pretty mediocre celly...
