Bob Duff: Athanasiou - was it worth it? By the time he's ready to play, Andreas Athanasiou will have missed three weeks of the NHL season and sacrificed over $600,000 in potential income.

I love how it's AA'S fault that his retard of a GM can't manage a cap. No surprise that his bff Duff isn't raking him through the coals.

Why hold out wanting more $$ and then finally sign for less??

Say what you will about Hollands past contracts, but in this case, I think Holland did the right thing with all things considered (i.e. having Larkin and Mantha both being RFA's this upcoming summer).

It would have been better had Babcock taken the Weiss buyout with him He was the one who wanted him so bad. That alone would have covered AA cap space wise.

Did the right thing? What choice did he have? He backed himself into a corner and hoped to God AA signed.

We'll know if AA makes more than 2.5 million next year

If he does, he was right to sit out and take the lesser 1 year deal, If he doesn't, then he'll have left money on the table

Won't know until 2018

To say Witkowski will not clear waivers is nonsense. He would clear waivers. He adds zero value to this team in terms of offense / points. Agree Frk would be claimed in a second. Start shopping Sheahan and get rid of him for whatever we can. Put Booth on waivers too while they're at it. Signing Witkowski and Booth to take up valuable roster spots was typical terrible Holland decisions. He is just delusional.

He just wants to play in the show, and will certainly not be a red wing next season. Hopefully the wings get a decent return. If the pens every do find a 3C and call up sprong, AA could make for a lethal 3rd line. but who knows

Ok just to help you guys out, Sheahan for a 3rd that will be a 2nd if we can possibly beat the Leafs. Or a 1st if we beat the Leafs twice (which we all know is impossible right)!

How do you know that he will certainly not be a Wing next season?? Signing the 1 yr deal still leaves him a RFA next summer if I'm not mistaken.

He did the right thing by not "caving" and sign him for too much $$- like he has done too many times in the past. When you know you have more RFA's coming up like Martha and Larkin, caving and overpaying is just going to lead to even more problems.

If reports have been accurate, AA was looking for $$. The KHL offer was rescinded because he wanted too much $$. The Swiss league was going to be less $$. The offer of 2 yrs @1.9 mil per has him leaving $$ on the table. The whole situation has me smh

It does. And there will be arbitration involved next time if they elect to. Something not available to him this last off season.

He couldn't cave though. That's the thing. They are in such cap hell, their only hope was AA signing . It's like when I got rid of my credit card. Now I can't spend money that I don't have. Same as the Wings.
