Slavin is a beast. If he puts up 45 points, or more, he should be a finalist. |

I would add Werenski, Seth Jones and Ekblad as possible contenders. |

I would like it changed to the Lidstrom or Orr Trophy. |

How about they just add a new trophy, one for offensive D the other defensive...and put an end to the perennial nonsense arguments...although now that I'm typing this, I suppose the argument would be about who the trophy gets named after... |

I'd be cool with that too...we could still name them the Orr and Lidstrom Trophies |

I really don't see why not. Gives a bit more publicity to the position/awards ceremony. Kind of unfair that defensemen are basically only able to win one trophy |

How about we just rename the Norris the Orrstrom?
Though if you wanted to have one just be for offensive-minded D, I think Paul Coffey would be the most appropriate. Lidstrom, Orr, and Bourque were all great players at all facets of the game. |

Wouldn't work. Look at the Selke trophy. It's never won by a Jay McClement type player. It always goes to someone who scores at least 20+ goals.
Only way to fix the NHL awards is to have them voted on by GM's instead of writers. As long as PHWA votes on awards, any other changes are pointless. |

Adam French: NHL Thoughts : New Name In Norris? - AdamFrench
Hi Adam: Great Blog and an excellent topic. I can't say I agree that any of those 4 d-man have much of a chance to win the Norris his year though and this is why. As you point out the Norris goes to a d-man that leads in scoring and for me Slavin is an outstanding d-man on an offensively challenged team. He's had a nice start, but I seriously doubt he will maintain that pace. Pietroangelo similarly can be counted on for 40 to 50 points and be solid. For me Doughty is just a great d-man offensively and defensively - he could be in the conversation at the end of the year but I don't see it with LA. Sure both Kopitar and Brown are off to great starts, but recent history is not on their side, I'm afraid neither is age. PK Subban is a possible candidate - I see a down year for Nashville though. As boring as it may be, my choices would be Karlsson, Burns and Hedman in that order. All should be in the top 25 in scoring - play heavy minutes and most of every power play. |

Orr trophy for sure. Lidstrom was fantastic, Orr was the best ever.

LOL! They could make 2 D trophies, one for best offensive and one for best defensive D men. Then, when they give both to Karlsson, people will start to realize he might be the best player in the league. |
