Bill, is there any reason why Elliot would the start when he let in at least two soft goalsi. His last start, looked a bit shaky, (fought the puck all night), and it would seem to be Neuverth's turn in the rotation??

Nuevy always plays the Caps tough. He almost stole that playoff series after Mase was giving up those tough deflections from center ice.

It will be interesting to see the new d men against them tonight.
Patrick had a good game and was moving well on some shifts late he was taking more control skating with the puck in the offensive zone. He seems to be more assertive each game.
Plus, he has more goals than Nico.

Hopefully catching them on the 3 game in 4 nights on the road will help. The Caps are highly skilled, but not the fastest team in the league. The Flyers need to keep the game moving at as fast a pace as possible and stay out of the penalty box. If they can do that, and they get good goaltending, they have a very good shot at coming away with 2 points tonight.

You can throw Kevin Hatcher and Mike Gartner in there too.

If you saw Mase's early season stat line, it might be Mason that misses the Flyers and not vice versa.

The Jets were awful playing in front of Mase and now his GAA looks like Nick Pivetta's ERA.

If they can keep Ovie in check they should be ok. He is slowing down, only one last game. They play a West coast type of game. After the Cali trip, the Flyers should be ready. Average goal tending will help. Unlike his workman like win in game one, Elliot had a workman like loss vs the Preds.
Need a better effort against the Caps, who ever starts.

GO FLYERS!!!

I have a hunch that few, if any, guys in the locker room miss Mason. Have no facts to back that up, just a feeling.

Are any of Martel, Aube-Kubel, Goulbourne and Fazleev considered legit prospects at this point?

Martel: borderline

Aube-Kubel: yes, but needs to really show them something this season. His stock is falling

Goulbourne: no

Fazleev: borderline

They are just so deep in prospects right now. There would be at least 10-12 forwards in the system that would all rate higher than any of these 4 right now.

Nak was supposed to be more of an offensive weapon but his nhl chances I think lie in a leier like role. Fazleez is an extremely defensively responsible forward who has a chance at a bottom 6 role. However I think our talent pipeline might just be too great for him to overcome and he could find a role elsewhere. The rest I really don't see being nhl players.

Aube-Kubel was a fairly high pick and I know people were really high on him. He is only in his 2nd pro year so plenty of time to still grow but I guess it does show how quickly prospect rankings can change.

He had a pretty terrible start to the pros. I think he can settle in and be a leier read type player in a bottom 6 role with speed and good hands. With the infusion of forward talent we have I don't see him ever being in a top 6 role for us but who knows see Jordan weal for example.

Martel is only a year older than NAK, and yet I feel he's a bit of an afterthought only because he was undrafted.

Martel seemed to have little problem adjusting to the AHL while NAK struggled. Not quite sure why Martel didn't get more of a look in the preseason.

Being 5'8 160 doesn't help him, especially when you are trying to crack a roster that already feature guys like Giroux, Konecny, Weal and now Leier. While size doesn't matter as much as it used to, there is still truth to the saying that you will take a skilled big man who can skate, over a skilled small man who can skate. I don't think Martel's game would really translate well into a 4th line role either, so he'd have to be one of their top 9 to make it.

He's a good, but not elite skater and you have to wonder if he would be able to get the separation he needs to be successful at the NHL level. There is some sandpaper to his game though, he may be small but he's pretty feisty so you never know. He's still young enough that there is still time for him to continue to work on his game and who knows, maybe he finds a way to make the team in a couple of years.

So, since I'm at work and kind of bored, here is today's top 10 list. These are my 10 favorite, non-superstar Flyers. To qualify as non-superstar, players must fit the following criteria:

Never won a major NHL award or trophy
Never was a 1st or 2nd team all star

Therefore, the following are eliminated from competition:
Bobby Clarke
Barry Ashbee
Bernie Parent
Bill Barber
Reggie Leach
Dave Poulin
Tim Kerr
Mark Howe
Bob Froese
Roman Cechmanek
Bob Froese
Eric Lindros
John Leclair
Ron Hextall
Eric Desjardins
Jake Voracek
Jaromir Jagr
Darryl Sittler
Chris Pronger
Paul Coffey
Peter Forsberg

HERE WE GO!!

10. Ivan Provorov D
I don't care that he's only been for a season plus 4 games, I LOVE watching this kid play. Plus, I have a feeling that in another couple of years, he'll no longer qualify for this list.

9. Rick Tocchet
"Blockhead" as we used to call him in section K, was just a fun guy to watch play. He was an old school Flyer through and through.

8. Jeremy Roenick
Can live without him as a commentator, but I loved to watch this guy play. He was colorful, worked his tail off and tough as a 2 dollar steak.

7. Ross Lonsberry
Quiet, classy player who just did everything well. He was a coaches dream and if you were a kid in the 70s and wanted to learn how to play the game the right way, Roscoe was the guy to watch

6. Brian Propp
Loved watching cut to the middle of the O zone and crank that snap shot in followed, of course, by the trademark guffaw!

5. Michael Renberg
Prior to a series of abdominal injuries, he was a pure powerhouse on the ice. Loved watching him play from the moment he first put on the Flyers sweater.

4. Paul Holmgren
Homer could beat you with his skill or his fists and his stare caused quite a few opponents to have to change their underwear between periods. A true warrior, he often played through serious injuries.

3. Danny Briere
A truly class act off the ice and joy to behold on it. He'll go down as one of the all time greatest clutch players in Flyers history. When the calendar moved to April, it was Briere time!

2. Rick Macleish
Another huge big game player for the orange and black, Macleish was so much fun to watch. He'd come flying down the ice with his hair streaming in the wind and you just knew that a killer wrist shot was coming. He just oozed talent.

1. Kimmo Timonen
The Finnish warrior is one of my all time favorite players period. He played hard every minute of every shift and I was thrilled when he got his name on the Stanley Cup. As I've said before, if every Flyer played every game with the heart and soul of Kimmo Timonen, this team would never miss the playoffs.

- Girouxy

I'm wondering where the projected end goal is for goaltending is with the Flyers. Mason left a positive impact on this organization that shows up in the record books. Before Stolarz injury, it seemed like he might be a capable back up at minimum and he was backing up for much of last season. Now we have not one but two bridge gaps in net.

Stolarz' injury is unfortunate. I understand even if he were healthy, he's waiver exempt. I just wonder, if Stolarz could play, when would he? If he could, why not stick with the guy you know, rather than the guy who might be...

Has anyone watched the ice guardians doc on netflix? It's about enforcers of the NHL. I got about 1hr into it and had to turn it off.

It's pretty cool so far.
