Don't forget the intangibles that Datsyuk brought to the Yotes.

I think McGinn is a little better than you are giving him credit for, but the trade is pretty lopsided for sure.

Total salary dump. Tallon saves apx 10mil over the life of the contracts. DT is also arrogant about guys he didn't draft or trade for

I wasn't sure about Chayka, but I'll admit, you were right about him, he's quickly becoming one of the better ones in the league. All he has to do now is win to prove it!

with a real defense, a solid goalie and a guy who can play in the 1C hole, it's not stretch for them to start winning.

Last year, on the worst team in the NHL (stats-wise, if not results-wise) McGinn averaged 12 minutes per night and was the 4th least used skater, and two of the guys below him played 40 and 46 games respectively.

So basically, McGinn is Coyotes second least used player, who is somehow paid $3.3 million, with two years left.

That's a TON of money to pay a 4th liner. In the article I called him a third liner, so I think I might have been being generous.

For me, it wasn't about specifically thinking that Chayka was good, it was about knowing how well an analytics and value-based approach would work against most NHL gms, who basically just make guesses based on their feelings.

Hjalmarsson, Demers, Stepan Raanta interesting vet additions for this team.

That core is pretty legit. Raanta is the key though, if he can be a respectable starter 55 games+ ...this team could be a surprise especially if the kids take the next step.

Raanta with 50 starts is going ot be a wild ride. IF he can do what he does in an expanded role, this team could be legit

I don't know if that's necessarily true these days, most teams use analytics to some extent, I just think Chayka's a smart guy.

This is a real nice deal for a solid RH defenseman for the Yotes. There is always going to be deals like this available when teams want to move out salary.

excellent , they replaced Coyotes all star defensman chris pronger

He's also better then Russel and half the defensman on the habs , it begs the question why no one else was in on this trade , a few teams could of used Demers at that price.

I heard that Demers said some mean things to Tallon and hurt his feelings so he traded him.

It is true though. From years of only hiring ex-players and insiders to run their teams, the league has a situation where at least half of their general managers are actively terrible.

And believe me, there are so many people with cushy media jobs who won't even call this trade out for what it is - a steal - because Tallon is a hockey guy and Chayka is some outsider.

No one in Florida is going "Oh no we lost Jason Demers!" Many are happy just to see him gone no matter what the return.

No rational person in existence would prefer Demers on their team over Adam Larsson.

Many consider Demers a #4/5 guy at best and a #7 at worst. He certainly can move the puck it's unfortunate that he can't reliably play defense.

Having said that the move itself is solid for Chayka just as long as he doesn't expect too much from Demers.

For sure. Like no one in the NHL wanted to part with anything better than McGinn?

Some ex players are really good at their jobs, others like Jim Benning and Trevor Linden are total meatheads .........................................

He's a decent powerplay guy (at least he was with the sabres), so 3rd liner seems fair. Still, this is a wacky trade for the panthers. I don't get it at all

Seems like Chayka is building the Coyotes in a similar manner to how Francis has been putting the Canes together, though Chayka has been a bit more aggressive about it.

Who cares what the average uninformed fan thinks?

No rational person in existence would prefer Demers on their team over Adam Larsson.

This is abuse of a logical fallacy. I think rational people put aside their feelings and look at the data. The data says Demers is better. Maybe he isn't but you'd have to make an argument about it other than non rational people think so.

Many consider Demers a #4/5 guy at best and a #7 at worst. He certainly can move the puck it's unfortunate that he can't reliably play defense.

Weird since his major impact is defensively.Due to massive shot suppression. I have also never heard any respectable person call him anything less than a second pairing guy, and I'd love to see an argument against this.

Having said that the move itself is solid for Chayka just as long as he doesn't expect too much from Demers.
