How the new offside rule is good for the Jackets

I think the over commitment to challenging offsides was due to that lucky video call back in November...

For the Jackets this new rule should really benefit them.... That’s an extra seven penalties they would have had to kill off

How is that going to really benefit them??

We saw coaches last season abuse the challenge system to an extent, challenging close offside plays to get an extended timeout for their team.

Not even 1 team used 15 challenges last year...15 challenges would be less than a challenge every 5 games. It looks like the average challeneges per team was about 10, which is 1 in eveyr 8 games...i hardly consider that "abusing the challenge system".

What is everyones problem with the game being called correctly??

I don't think the rule change is going to significantly cut down on off-side challenges. Challenges occur after the opponent scores a goal in an attempt to have the goal overturned. If the challenge works 66.7% of the time, then that means the "profitability" of a challenge is 0.67 goals. If the challenge fails and now the team goes on the PK for two minutes, there is a roughly 20% chance they'll give up a goal. So the "net" goal of a challenge would still be as follows:

0.67 - (0.33 * 0.2) = .604

So instead of gaining an average of 0.67 goals on a challenge, teams will gain .604 goals. It's fair to assume that there will probably be slightly fewer challenges on goals where it's obvious the opposing player was off-side. But on plays in which it seems to be a close call, the reward for the challenge still very much outweighs the risk and we shouldn't expect to see the needle move as much as some (myself included) are hoping.

It's a nuisance and slows the game down for something that is ultimately meaningless.

Who the (frank) cares about being half an inch offside when icing calls are completely subjective?

Like I said once every 8 games...hardly "slowing the game down". So when the rules are a nuisance, they should be ignored?
