i think eichel might win. theyll rely on him more than the Leafs will Matthews. Babcock plays a more balanced system. depends if the pepperoni faced ginger can stay healthy.

He could be the fourth best C by the end of next season, but right now...Crosby, McDavid, Malkin...then a bunch of other guys...if Matthews scores forty goals again he'll be in that spot but for now that's a toughie

Also as deadly as Geno is offensively, there's an case to be made that AM's all around game is more rounded. There's no topping Sid and Connor tho.

Matthews is a great young player, but so far, from my view, he's in the mold of Stamkos, a shooter type of center. Again, Stamkos is awesome, but he's not a top five center in the league.

I'm not slammin Matthews, I'd love to have him on my team, I just don't think there's justification to say he's a top five center in the league....yet.

It depends on what you mean by top center. Top 10? Top 5? There's definitely justification to say he's top 10. He finished 9 in scoring among centers and is probably better defensively than 2 directly above him. He played all year with Hyman who has no finish and half a year with connor brown who struggled early and missed a ton of gimmies. Matthews is a solid playmaker and if he wasn't playing with a couple 3rd line rookies for most of the year probably would of been close to a pt per game. I'm not saying he's top 4 yet but he's definitely a "top" center.

Ya I'd agree with you that matthews isn't there just yet!,but..Babcock does have him playing a 200ft game,and if Babcock had of just let matthews do his thing (offensive talent ) and gave him more minutes, and not worry about defence,he would of had more points than he had!imho,But babs wants him to play a responsible (again)a 200ft game and be defensive at all ends. Matthews said he would like to emulate Toews game,and the points are not as important as the win! I believe that Eichel can out point matthews,and also I've always said that Laine would probably score more goals! In saying all that I have no question that matthews all around talent will eventually be second only to mcdavid! ..ooh im so bold! This kid is amazing and he's the real deal!

Ya great points! Being a rookie and playing with rookies, no doubt that it affected point totals! I believe that if he had jvr on the left side that would of benefited him more in point totals, but I also think that hyman is more superior defencivly, than jvr ...But! the team would of possibly suffered at the other end of the rink! Anyhow matthews 76pts this season with.. willy and marli! ...sounds like a kids show?

That's funny! ..could be? he already is Michael the entire hockey world was talking about this kid before he was even drafted!,then again raving about him on draft day! And then his first nhl game he scores 4 goals! and again the entire hockey world, including parts of Europe,Were talking about him!Allstars game? Then he goes on to score 40 goals in his rookie year on a line with ...rookies! and the in the playoffs scores 4 more in 6 games,then goes on to win the rookie of the year hands down!.. it's weird that a leafs blogger wouldn't know?..that this kid is already a star! and leaf nation couldn't be more happier!

Lefty ... your posts are usually grounded, particularly for a Canucks fan, however, comparing Bo Horvat (who has 49 goals, 117 points and is a -45 over almost three full seasons is baloney. Connor Brown's numbers are much more comparable to Horvat's. except Brown has been more responsible defensively. Matthews had one of the most memorable rookie campaigns in recent memory out scoring many $10 million a year guys that were supposed to be elite team leaders.
