Goldberg was a complete liability and was a locker room cancer with his constant demands to be traded to Philly. No idea how he was perennial fan favorite.

I'm just surprised that Russ Tyler was able to don a full set of goalie gear during a 30-second timeout.

And I'm pretty sure that Iceland was guilty of 4 interference calls when they smashed into the Flying V (not to mention they had 6 skaters on the ice during that goal).

I had a crush on Connie and Julie.

While I must confess I haven't actually watched D2 or D3 (hell, I haven't watched D1 in one sitting - I've probably seen all of it over the years, but only in chunks), it always pisses me off when I see hockey movies that completely break the rules.

OK, I get the Flying V - funny, cute, sure it would be interference, but I"ll let that go.

But when they get really simple things wrong - like, couldn't you hire a guy who played 3 years of houseleague to read the script and point out the most glaring errors?

Not to mention the constant and untimely flatulence.

This blog reminded me of a failed Reddit post I made a few years go. I had a blast researching it though.

"How old were the Ducks in the D2? The movie was released in 1994 so I'm going to assume they played in the 1994 Junior Goodwill Games. Mighty Ducks 1 was released in 1992 when they won a Peewee hockey title. In the US, Peewee hockey players are 11-12 years old, I think under 13 in Canada. So, two years later in 1994, they're playing in the Goodwill Games. I'm going to assume they're anywhere between 13-15 years old.

At these ages, the players in this tournament may be eligible for the '96,'97,'98,'99 drafts. '96 for the players bordering 16, '99 for for the players just turning 13.

Group A
USA - Rob Scuderi, Tom Poti, Mark Parrish, Mike York, Scott Gomez, Brian Gionta, Ryan Miller
Iceland - nobody
Italy - nobody
Trinidad-Tobago - nobody
Germany - Marco Sturm

Group B
Sweden - Daniel and Henrik Sedin, Henrik Zetterberg
Canada - Danny Briere, Brad Richards, Vinny Lecavelier, Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, Roberto Luongo, Eric Brewer, Nick Boynton, Daniel Cleary, Brendan Morrow, Brian Campbell, Alex Tanguay, Simon Gagne, Jonathan Cheechoo, Mike Ribeiro
Russia - Pavel Datsyuk, Sergei Samsonov, Maxim Afinogenov, Andrei Markov
Denmark - nobody
France - nobody

Players left out - Their countries didn't participate Danius Zubrus, Zdeno Chara, Pavel Kubina, Tomas Kaberle, Olli Jokinen, Marian Hossa, Martin Havlat, Radim Vrbata

After going through it, it doesn't look like the Penguins picked up many of these players (Scuderi, Morrow, Hossa). Hossa is the only All Star drafted in one of these years to have played for the Penguins and his Slovakia wasn't a part of the tournament.

Looking back at the players who may have been in Group B and the scrubs we had on Team USA, I think we lucked out with getting drawn into Group A.

Got this little nugget from Yohes Q&A on DK's site...

Sid and Geno are wonderful friends, in fact. I see it all the time. They’re really tight. And it’s their team now more than ever. You know the famous story, when four players (Adams, Cooke, Staal, Orpik) thought it was perhaps time for a new captain to be named when Sid was out for so long with the concussions? They met with four other players (Fleury, Malkin, Asham, Dupuis). After a brief meeting, Malkin stood up and said, “This is f******* stupid. Sid captain.) And that was that. There is an intense loyalty between those two.

Back to back cups later and still trying to push the narrative Geno would rather be top dog somewhere else and we should trade him. I respect the undying loyalty to your brand. We don't choose the hills we die on, they choose us.
