He's still an NHL-caliber player, albeit probably a 4th line/PK type. Probably the first time since his rookie year that he'll have to earn a job in camp.

Lower cap hit and Read would get much less hate.

Trade Read to Minny with 50% salary retained and get back a prospect or a pick.

Hextall needs to clear out some of the bottom 6 glut that they have going on.

FWIW, I don't think Read is going anywhere. They don't want kids sitting in the pressbox and I don't see Vecchs or Leier making the everyday lineup so both will probably end up in LHV (yeah, I know Leier needs to clear waivers, but I don't see much chance of anyone claiming him). Read will either be on the 4th line or in the press box. With the assumption that Patrick and Lindblom are in the opening day lineup, I think the final lineup spots will come down to a battle between Read, Lehtera, Weise and Laughton and the other 2 will be the spares.

Read is good depth for the club. Good to have in camp for the younger players to battle against. No one in that bottom 6 is going to be handed a spot so read has value. Hopefully camp plays out in such a way that he's a 13th forward or LHV bound

Read is the least of their problems. I mean, he is overpaid, but definitely has value. Unless he gets surpassed by a glut of other players and the roster spot becomes critical to keep open, hold onto him until you can find a deal between now and the deadline.

IMHO Read's game was impacted more than anyone realized by his injuries two years ago. He doesn't have the dash he once had. He doesn't have the edge speed he once had and he seems to have lost some of his certainty with the puck on his backhand (it may have been that skill more than any that made him a flexible top 9 forward, that and his skating).

I dont see him going anywhere either. He can be waived if a spot is needed, and if the Flyers do stay healthy, they maybe send out a forward at some point during the season. Hextall will wait for an opportunity though. The depth is an asset in his mind.

Hextall can use waivers exemption to guarantee they keep everyone (Leier) but I get the feeling he would clear as well. I think Weise is the least valuable to the team fwiw

Yeah, I'm with you on Weise. Mainly due to his contributing nothing on special teams and his general mediocrity at ES. I'd have no problem if they waived him to keep Leier on the roster. But if they do that, I want Leier in the lineup. I'd rather have him playing significant minutes in LHV than sitting in the press box in Philly.

edit: I'd be at least mildly surprised if Lindblom doesn't make the team. He was a dominant player last season in a league that's as good or better than the AHL, and during a short previous stint in the AHL, he looked great. IMO, he's ready to play in the NHL.

I was encouraged by how he played down the stretch last year. If he can play like that consistently, I think it's going to be Read, as the odd man out.

Agreed. I think this year will be even more frustrating than last in regards to young guys "learning from the press box"

Yup, an occasional scratch of young player is fine, but, for the most part, they need to play and coaches need to accept the fact that rookies are going to make mistakes from time to time.

Yeah maybe. But during that short stretch, I though his success was due more to the play of Couturier and to a slightly lesser extent, Schenn, than anything he was doing. However, I'd love for him to prove me wrong and step up and clearly win a spot. His inability to contribute on special teams though is a big strike against him. They are going to need some PKers in their bottom six, and that is not his game.

If Read is off the team somehow, Lappy should try and turn Weise into a PKer.

He did it with Simmonds last season after Wayne hadn't logged more than seven minutes of SH TOI in a season since 09-10.

Weise is a 20-23 point player throughout his career. I don't see that changing. He really offers little to no value.

I guess it's worth a try. Simmonds though, was a guy who took a regular shift and plays heavy pp minutes and until he was needed, there was really no reason to try him on the PK. Weise is a 4th liner, who is lucky to see more than 10 minutes or so of ice time per game. I'd be pretty surprised that no coach, including Hak, at some point during this guys career tried him on the PK. He skates well enough and has a decent size and reach, you'd think he'd be a natural for the PK. My guess, and it's just a guess, is that he just doesn't do well in the role.

I could live with that. It could also make him a trade target down the road if he isn't half bad.

Agreed but I think Hakstol/Flyers value him more over Read
