Darcy and whoever was running those drafts were God awful. Darcy should have been fired as soon as the Pegula's closed the deal to buy the Sabres just based on that drafting alone.

yeah...

Jim Benning was Darcy's main guy until Devine took over in 2007, I believe...lest we forget, this was also the era of the JTSwinehart-penned "VideoScout 3000" years where they went to mostly video after cutting the scouting department down

If Darcy had any self-respect and wanted to save his GM career he should have got the Hell out then if he had any idea he couldn't have a respectable scouting program by video.

"Of Buffalo's five first round picks from those years, the Sabres whiffed on two as neither Marek Zagrapan (2005, 13th) nor Dennis Persson (2006, 24th) played a game in the NHL. Zack Kassian (2009, 13th) played in only 27 games for the Sabres before he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks in 2012"

3 more reasons why pick 21 for lehner was not a terrible deal, maybe a trade made a year too early

it was Quinn's way of furthering Golisano's "just break even" mandate

One reason why I don't get worked up into a tizzy for #21 pick, strong supposed draft or not. Drew Stafford at 13 didn't blow me away either.

that huge void from those years is also, i believe, the main reason murray was looking for 24-26 yr. old young vets and why he jumped at the opportunity to trade for kane, bogo, oreilly and lehner

Either did Grigorenko at 12 or Girgensons at 14 in 2012. Always a crapshoot way too much energy spent on this site on that pick.

TM really wanted ROR and Kane and they wouldn't have been available the next year. Not to mention we wouldn't have had the draft pick capital the next year to complete the deals. He also wanted to deal Myers, there was a NTC that kicked that summer so he had to be dealt or the Sabres were stuck with a limited NTC.

They've been saying this about Duchene for almost 2 years, Galchenyuck almost a year, Fowler, etc...

There is no way of knowing this for sure. No one else was rushing the phones to trade for an injured Kane and the Douche situation makes me wonder how we even got ROR from Colorado to begin with.

1. roy loved gringo
2. zads was projected as a #2/3 d man
3. pick 31
4. compher is a decent prospect
5. they were going to have to pay ROR
6. ror already signed an offer sheet once before to leave colorado

interesting article on ROR
https://www.nhl.com/news/...ostly-for-flames/c-658088

"When the Colorado Avalanche quickly matched Calgary's offer sheet to Ryan O'Reilly on Thursday, they actually helped prevent a potentially costly situation for the Flames.

Calgary signed the 22-year-old center to a two-year $10 million offer sheet Thursday afternoon, and by evening the Avalanche had matched. As Chris Johnston of Rogers SportsNet first reported Friday morning, had the Avalanche not matched, the Flames would have yielded first- and third-round picks in the 2013 NHL Draft and O'Reilly would have had to be put on waivers.

Because O'Reilly played two games for Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Kontinental Hockey League after the NHL season started, he would have been subject to the same provision that allowed the New York Islanders to claim Evgeni Nabokov after he signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings during the 2009-10 season."

Drunken ramblings-

If u buy a hockey team and don't know poop from shineola about running one, keeping the smooth talking gm from the last period of Sabres greatness might seem like a good idea. Neat greatness being defined as 2005-2008. Add in fanboyism and voila a poop show like we have now!!!!
