Ah yes.. the dog days of a hockeyless summer. I couldnt quite bring myself to watch the NHL Network's replay of the '85 and '87 Cup Finals clinching games yesterday. I peeked in long enough to see Paul Coffey blast a one timer off of Froese's glove to make it five or six to one (I think) in Game 5 and that was quite enough for me, thank you.

Anyone else think Jagr to Las Vegas would be a smart match? It seems like he's having trouble finding NHL work, and I'm sure Las Vegas would like to be able to use his name.

In reply to jmatchett, I feel Jagr's issue with finding a team is related to whatever demands he's making. If he was willing to take whatever role was offered, along with a pay cut from prior years, he could easily find work.

In regards to Vegas, I agree it would be a good match between his demands for playing time and Vegas needing another name to market. However, he probably wants to go to a team that has the talent to make it to the playoffs. Plus, it just wouldn't look right if one of those guys in the Jagr club had to wear a Vegas sweater.

I agree, if he wanted to play for lower pay/less of a major role, he could probably find work with several teams, including contenders. Las Vegas just seems like the best place for him to get paid what he likes and have a more central role. He'd actually be the perfect guy for an expansion team. However, like you said, if he wants to play for a team with serious playoff aspirations, Las Vegas wouldn't be the place for him.

I dont see why he wouldn't want to play there and then get traded to a contender

I also think he should just take like the first 2 months of the season off

Would that make his cap hit (and pay) pro-rated? Say he only played for 1/4 of the season length, would his cap hit/pay only be for 3/4 of what he signed for? Do most contracts pay based on a full season? Of course, he could always work in a signing bonus.

Would make sense from a health standpoint.

Yep. It seems that if the reports are true he is seeking somewhere in the 4 million range, I would have to say no thanks.

If his price comes down i'm sure there are a few teams who would be interested. As someone said, Vegas would seem to be a good destination. Except for all the gambling trouble he has had in the past.

I would think it would be 3/4 of whatever "cap hit" would be, similar to a player signing an ELC at the end of the season.

For Jagr it could be worked around to fit the daily limit. Plus he is over 35 and will probably sign a 1 year deal, so performance bonuses could be put into his contract

He's still relatively productive and brings a lot of valuable intangibles. I don't find ~$4m to be too expensive.

I get that, but I am guessing that at age 46, teams may be starting to wonder if he could just fall off a cliff.

Im not saying that is what would happen, the guy is a beast, but that could be why teams are holding off.

If Thornton can get $8 mil for one year, I'd have to think Jagr can get $4 mil for one year

I have to imagine at least one team has had some communication with him

It isnt. He is worth it. It seems easy for a team to mitigate the risk with performance bonuses too.

Congrats Ustimenko!
Between him, Sandstrom, Hart and even Stolarz and Lyon, it's hard not to think that at least one will turn into a top notch starter.

The only thing holding Jagr could be management cutting his playing time/scratching him to keep him from reaching those bonuses.
