so Leafs keep JVR this year, try and have good playoffs, then if he wants too much money, not offer him a contract, but instead get Kovalchuk?

I know I am repeating your recent blog Lucas, but I think it warrants stating again.....it makes too much sense for the Leafs to not make one of, or both of the following trades (not specifics, but general framework).....

1. JVR the main component in a trade for a top-4 defenceman.

2. Move out a large number of contracts for 1 in return (like the Grabner trade from 2 years ago).

Another option would be some sort of combination of the above (e.g. JVR + 2 or 3 contracts for a d-man).

What I do not expect is a Bozak trade. Leafs lack organizational depth at center, and I can see him wanting to stay long-term at a reasonable cost (or so I hope).

Number 2 has been reported will have to occur for some time now.

It’s just a matter of how he progresses and he knows this, one step at a time and who knows the Leafs just may have selected a dandy goalie prospect that matures into a starting goaltender. It’s been a while…
