The Hawks should have kept Hjalmarsson and dealt Seabrook imo. Lower cap hit and younger player. |

Believe that was what they hoped to do—under the radar, not publicized, but . . . |

And sent him to Edmonton (if the smoke was true that these teams were in talks) |

I meant to chime in on this one but didn't get my piece in on time.
I was not surprised so much by them dealing Panarin—I had been reporting the possibility for well over a week at that point.
It was Columbus as dance partner (I had heard VGK, Montreal as possible destinations), and in particular, Saad coming back that was really surprising to me.
I was fairly sure Saad was in Columbus longterm. |

The one team I heard they definitely talked to re: Seabrook was Vancouver, FWIW. I also heard secondarily (as everyone did) about TOR and EDM, but never directly.

definitely Colorado. i don't care if they're tanking. they're sending the message that last season's performance was 100% acceptable by the organization's standards. that's how you build a losing mentality. |

that combined with the Kuznetsov signing was the dumbest occurrence of the offseason. it was totally unforced. |

Even more dumb than signing TJ for 8 more years after a career year at the ripe age of 30? |

Pretty sure the Hawks FO tried to move Crow then Seabs to rid the contracts and open the cap. Failing there, Hammer was the next option with any trade value.
I've said for awhile the it was funny that the Hawks had 6M for Panarin but not to keep Saad. The trade was less of a shock, more of a surprise. SB trades Panarin to CBJ for Anisimov and Saad. Good work!
If the Hawks had any depth at center, they could trade AA for a #3D man, but Danault was traded for 2 guys(Fleishman, Weiss) who barely played in the playoffs. A move now that looks more costly.
McNeil was a bust, Hayes never signed, Clendenning was a bust, so an 0 for 4 with 1st round picks. There goes the depth right there. |

That, and they traded Teravainen (2012 1st) away to get rid of one of their other gross contracts. |

Essentially, the majority of the Hawks depth/roll players are in Raleigh now, and the Hawks now have significant cap AND depth issues.
It's the price you pay for a mini dynasty, I suppose. |

Clendenning was a 2nd rounder and Schmaltz and Hartman are with the big club. Hayes ended up being out out of their control and McNeil was the only one who ended up being a bust...the Danault trade was definitely a bummer at the time and worse in hindsight. |

blah blah blah
Same recycled narrative that people keep on saying when they will be having 11 guys in this years starting roster that weren't there to start last year.
But sure they havent done any changes. They started to do it at the end of last season. They have been doing things slowly, nothign flashy or big but on paper its a pretty big overhaul

Just bc a couple of these guys played 20 some games for the last year doesn't mean they cant be considered part of the change over...the bolded guys are players that have been brought in over the past 12 months and didnt play for the first quater to half of last years season. Nieto and Barbs played b/w 30-40 games for them last year so if you want to get nit picky with that then sure.
a 50% change over in a roster starting from game 48 last year till now...I dont think thats doing nothing. Its not big flashy changes but they have made a lot of moves |

One important factor not to overlook in the Hammer vs Seabs debate is right handed vs Left handed shot. Hawks have a surplus of lefties but few righties. I can't help but think this played a role, especially having lost TVR, their only other starting righty next to Seabrook. |
