Giles Senn should've been a defenseman pick. Jockton Chainey may end up being a better prospect than Jacobs |

Todd Cordell: On Auvitu signing with the Oilers, Jacobs' AHL struggles & more - Todd.Cordell
Was never impressed with Auvitu. I get the that stats make him look serviceable, but he got pushed around physcially by basically everyone, and his defensive game was horrid. Maybe you can hide him on a deeper roster, but he was exposed nightly in NJ. He wasn't even a good PP catalyst like people claim, all he had was a decent slap shot.
I get the argument though: with so much cap space and with an obvious need why not try one more year?
If they bring back Stollery I'll be livid. |

The D is a complete goat (frank) an it'll end up ruining Cory Schneider if we can't put a something better in front of him.
In addition to the article we also lost Mozik (whom never got much of a shot either) and Helgeson to free agency.
There are still some free agents available although nothing to exciting.
Oduya, Franson, Despres, Polak, Wideman, Markov, Campbell....
Washington would love to get rid of Orpik and should pay us to take him.... |

If Washington wanted to get rid of Orpik they would have bought him out and not sent Johansson to us for picks. |

Ugh, Despres was a Shero guy...he'll be here for sure. |

There was a lot of talk about wanting to getting rid of him or buying him out but they also lost a lot of D men this offseason. |

I bet he'd get a guaranteed deal. I'm pretty sure whoever takes that spot is gonna be a Stempniak type of deal. That is, someone to log minutes, show themselves, and probably move at the deadline. And I'm cool with that. |

Ray Shero will be shopping the waiver wire in late September/early October hoping for a home run. |

Shero should just offer sheet Parayko already. |

The Devils are in no position to start giving up first round draft picks this season will be all about letting the young forwards get NHL experience and hopefully Severson Muller and Kapla all take steps forward and then Shero will assess the D and make some moves and signings to fill in the holes, Exciting time to be a Devils fan most excited I've been for the start of a season in a long time |

Exactly. I've mentioned this a couple times in the past few days, but here's how we can start looking like a contender in just 1 more year:
Clearly this year is leading nowhere but another top 5 pick. Hopefully even higher and we can draft one of the top D, Dahlin if we're lucky. Then we bring in JVR and Carlson (both from NJ). This team already starts to look dangerous.
But wait, there's more. When the Rags inevitably sign Kovalchuk to some stupid contract, THEN we make our move and offer sheet Skjei.
This can all be done by this time next year and this team will be looking good for a long time to come. Not saying it's likely, but none of this is even really that far-fetched. |

Carlson is actually from MA, played in NJ. Parayko is younger and just as good if not better.
The Rangers have over 28mil in cap space next year and can sign Kovalchuk, Miller, and Skjei with no problem.
You would give our 1st to the NYR instead of STL? |

The odds are greater for NJ moving forward then backwards if we got Parayko. Severson is a #3 and won't get any better in terms of being a top guy. And hoping that Mueller and Kapla become something is not something we should hold our breathe for.
Parayko is 24, if not him then who?

Surprised Markov hasn't been signed yet, think Shero would look at him as a stop gap? |

He was born in MA but grew up in NJ. And in my scenario we get a top D prospect (hopefully Dahlin), Carlson, AND Skjei. In yours we can only get Parayko and Carlson, I'd prefer the former.
On top of what you mentioned they will also need to re sign Vesey and Hayes plus a backup goalie and that doesn't even account for whatever Zibanejad will be getting for next year. Potentially add Kovy to the mix and they're in some trouble.
If we did it this year for Parayko we lose a top draft pick, which could potentially be Dahlin or another top D. If we wait a year and things are really starting to look like we can take then next step into the playoffs, would I give the Rags what would then hope to be a non-lottery pick in order to take their top young D? Without question.

It is pretty rare for GMs to offer sheet RFAs so it seems unlikely for this to happen.
Beyond that it's unlikely to be successful. |

Anybody asking if the Devils system is maybe the issue. Everyone keeps saying Ray Shero is a top-tier GM, and Hynes is a top-tier coach, but, are they? Is the Devils staff really that good.
Someone mentioned Mozik before. He went to Europe, and probably won't be back, at least while Shero is GM, but they gave him a qualifying offer so Devils still have his rights.
Statistically, he was always a plus player, had size and played with a bit of edge, scored 10 goals last year in Albany (plus 10 assists) so he was not a total zero with the puck.
But Ben Lovejoy needs to be Shero's ears in the lockerroom, so he got to play every night, even when it did the team no good.
And let's not worry about ruining Cory Schneider He is NOT an elite NHL goalie. He is a good NHL goalie, but let's not delude ourselves into thinking he is ever going to carry a team. I would have rather the Devils gotten a long-term asset for him, and go with Kinkaid and Blackwood this year, to know if in four seasons when this team might be ready to win, if we had a goalie who was in the core, not hitting the back side of his career. |

Schneider's career numbers say otherwise and point to elite production. Last year was the exception, but I agree he cannot carry the team, but with a better D in front of him his game will blossom very quickly. |

No complaints about Shero. He has done a lot with very little and in a fairly short amount of time. Hynes I've never been sold on, but am willing to give him this year to see how the team progresses.
