3 assistant coach hires, 3 former forwards. Is Stevens running the defense?

We have over $7M in cap space with 20 players on the roster. Gravel, LaDue, and one of Brodzinski, Kempe, & Mersch will fill the last 3 spots, and won't take up more than $2.5-3M. that leaves us with $4M+ in cap space.

I hardly call that "licking the cap ceiling."

Kings would be able to afford almost any player with the cap they have now. WITH brown and gaborik in the books. Their contracts are atrocious, no doubt, but the kings can surely find away around them if they wanted to. They will most certainly trade a contract to go get a landeskog or duchene or JVR, if these players are really available.

and don't mention doughty either, with his contract ending soon. He'll get what, a 2mil raise? Ok kings will still be fine.

It's the young players that need to perform at low costs. That's the problem with the kings. Not the 2 albatross contracts.

Am I mistaken that we aren't factoring in Gaborik yet because they are playing a shell game with LTIR and his AAV right now?

I know you aren't talking to me but If I'm understanding you correctly, gaborik is NOT yet on LTIR thus kings have roughly 7mil in space RIGHT NOW. When gaborik goes on LTIR then it'll be about 11mil.

If that is the case we should get Jagr and play him with Kopi and Cammalleri. don't have much to lose, 4mil - 1year. I would do that. Brown Shore and Lewis on the 4th, I am ok with that

I heard that Gaborik has become allergic to his equipment and Brown is allergic to Ca. Pistachios so both will go on LTIR.

Doughty will end up with a more lucrative contact than Kopitar. My guess is right around 8 years/ $11M. Doughty is arguably the best in the NHL at his position. Kopitar is elite, but no higher than 3rd best in the league at his position.

Funny reading that Kopitar is top-3 league wide, meanwhile, Leaf fans think Bozak>Kopitar.

LaDue and Gravel resigned for $875k and $650k respectively. I seem to recall that I got a lot of crap for suggesting that they would resign for a combined $1.5M. Looks like I wasn't too far off.

I would love to see Bozak on the Kings though, he would be an awesome third line center

The Turgeon addition to the staff is interesting.....my feeling has always been that while players can always improve their scoring potential by improving their strength, conditioning and puck skills, it is also greatly influenced by what teammates (forwards and defensemen) they play with most often, and what type of opportunities they receive (offensive vs. defensive zone starts, opposition matchups, PP time). And with all that, there are great athletes and solid hockey players who can't put the puck in the ocean (former King Gene Carr comes to mind) while there are other guys like Luc Robitaille who might not even be drafted today (was an 9th round pick back in 1984, a round that doesn't exist anymore) you don't expect to somehow have 668 goals in their stick.

That said, just having Turgeon on the staff could potentially help.....just giving the players a reminder that guys, we gotta put the puck in the net, and how can we do it ? The only downside I see is if the so-called "offensive coordinator" might want players to handle certain situations differently than other coaches - what if Turgeon tells a defenseman to pinch more aggressively, then another coach tells him he's being too aggressive on the pinch ? Hopefully the staff can make sure the players get the same message from everyone.....mostly, put a few pucks in the net while not giving away anything on the other end.....pretty much what every team in the league is doing, to some degree.

That seems like a reasonable guess. Interesting that they talked to Stothers, and as far as we know, no other former defensemen.

It's the young players that need to perform at low costs. That's the problem with the kings. Not the 2 albatross contracts.
- KINGS67

I mean, they're both problems. If one of those albatross contracts was performing at his pay grade, that would mitigate need for youngsters to outperform contracts, and vice versa. But between the bad contracts and relatively underwhelming young talent, well, here we are.

I seem to recall that I got a lot of crap for suggesting that they would resign for a combined $1.5M. Looks like I wasn't too far off.
- tkecanuck341

What were others guessing? 1.5 doesn't sound off-base. I thought LaDue might cross $1 mil per if LA locked him up a little longer, that's about it. Gravel hasn't done enough to earn a significant raise.

Obviously, you'd think Stevens and company would make sure that Turgeon was "team player." But would be interesting and ugly if an "Adam Oates situation" arose -- where Oates is telling players to do things differently than the coaching staff. Of course, Oates was an independent skills coach at that time.
