Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks sign LaBate, lose Rollie Melanson, change scouting staff The Vancouver Canucks brought one more player under contract on Friday when they signed Joseph LaBate to a one-year, two-way contract. The team is also making some changes to its scouting staff and will say goodbye to goaltending consultant Rollie Melanson, who reunites with Cory Schneider as goaltending coach with the New Jersey Devils.

Good read Carol.....I'm sitting in my hotel pub in Muscat Oman, it's 10:12pm and my body clock won't let me be tired yet, enjoying an ice cold Carlsberg beer ( ) thinking about home and it's always nice to read your thoughts on the team.

I'm extremely happy with the draft and looking forward to one or two of those kids making their mark on the Canucks future.

I've literally been waiting 30 years for the Canucks to clean-house in the scouting department! About time.

Delorme needs to pack it in too, won't happen on TL's watch though.

Have you watched Lind a bunch? What's your 411?

Saw him quite a lot actually, reminds me of a very young Rick Tocchett (sp?) or Shane Doan. Great hockey IQ and hands, give him the puck and he's got a nose for the net, a really good shot that's really sneaky (not that it's like a laser beam, but it's deceptive in that it changes velocity and is hard for a goalie to read). He's not going to crush players with hits like a pure power forward, but he does go into the dirty areas and mixes it up.

Mainly, because Kelowna's in a bit of a down year because most of their talent graduated to the NHL that won the Memorial Cup 2 years ago ala LD and Marner, over the season he was relied more and more to do it all for them. I expect that to continue in his draft+1 season and for his totals to improve. Like Colton Sissons, he really should have gone in the mid to late first round, we have a real steal in him.

Nice insight. So should Lind be getting an invite to team Canada or not?
How far away do you think he is from competing for NHL?

No problem, I have season's tickets to the Rockets, although I only get to go to about 1/3 of their home games and all the games they play against the Giants at the LEC. I'll keep everyone posted about his progress if you all want. As I said, with Kelowna being in a down period, I expect Lind to improve on his goal/point totals and play in all situations. IMHO, he's about 2-3 years away from making it to the NHL, his weaknesses are mainly in his defensive game which will require him to play a year and a bit in Utica to fix up. I think he probably either makes Team Canada for the WJC or is one of the final cuts, I see him making our roster in 2020 (along with EP).
