As noted in the previous thread, the Rangers have a lot of players that probably need one more year in order to be NHL ready. If they can find a veteran willing to take a one year contract they get production this year and they don't block one of their younger players next year. Normally players don't want a one year deal but if the Rangers don't sign Shattenkirk they'll have plenty of money to overpay for one year to a guy like Marleau, who is still pretty fast by the way.

Pouliot is somewhat intriguing but only on a 1 year contract imo.

Just read on blueseatblogs.come that Klein is 100% retiring haven't seen it anywhere else but if true another 3 mil in space. I'm one of the few that wants them to sign Shatty as I think he can help.

l def think he can help. The problem becomes in year 3, 4, 5, 6 or more of the contract he wants will he still be productive? Plus his rumored "poor" defensive play. For the first 2-3 years wherever he signs he will put up numbers.

Yeah valid pt but I really feel like hIm not playing the physical shot blocking game like Girardi played will allow him have a longer productive career. As far as him being terrible in his own end can't be any worse then what we saw from this team last season. And IF he can be the guy who finally gets pp going that would help. Big if but he does have top notch offensive abilities.

IF we can sign Shattenkirk to a (not looking for a discount, that's out of the question) reasonable deal then I'm fine with signing him, I just feel the $ & the term is gonna be through the roof, its his chance to cash in big & he knows it.

No other names, including Thornton, Marleau, Bonino, Hartnell, Pouliot, etc. will make a difference in CONTENDING "while rebuilding in the fly", without obtaining a TOP, right handed shooting OFFENSIVE d'man to pair with McDonagh, and run their power play. And that must also be done while not creating any more holes on the PRO roster. For those thinking that Deangelo IS that answer, he is nothing more than what some last weekend had already degraded Andersson down to be, prior to ever hitting the ice at practice. What does 39 games played with Arizona prove that he will be able to do here? In addition, he has a troubled history off the ice due to his immaturity.
If the overall better and younger (for those still here) roster after the Cup Finals loss in 2014 needed a nearly decade older Dan Boyle at $4.5M to TRY (& fail) for 2 seasons to fill that SAME NEED, then how can a "rebuilding on the fly" roster go without a Shatty signing in order to at least "CONTEND WHILE REBUILDING ON THE FLY" while Hank is still around???
It kind of defeats the reason for re-signing Smith at an excessive rate for most NHL teams, except for a few teams like us. In addition, the Stepan/Raanta trade's purpose would have meant nothing without using the cap savings gained in difference (excluding Raanta since a new backup must still be obtained).

A few points:
1) while the forward is lonked to who is brought in D, evaluating those options separate and distinct from the D should be part of the determination as to path forward
2) question I posed had nothing to do with 'Kirk. You know my view there
3) don't think the Smith signing was excessive at all. Maybe, maybe 300k, but t me, it was right in the range I expected
4) back up goalie is now a key. I liked Kinkaid and Johnson, both are gone. Now, I like Nilsson, really want no part of Niemi. Maybe they deal a pick for one, but not an option I like.

Really hope we stay away from all 3. Maybe Bonino on a 2 year deal. But not at 5 mil. Crazy. I'd prefer sign 2 younger guys like Yakupov and Burmistrov on cheaper short term deals. Both have a lot of upside still and maybe in our system will flourish

Hartnell on 4th line at a 1mill 1yr deal? He's got the grit we need up front and is a step up from glass

HATE that douchebag but gotta admit, he could contribute & add some grit & depth on the 4th line, 1 yr deal for little to nothing?

Would love to have that grit on the 4th, but isn't he too slow? I would rather give Pouliot a year...

I wouldn't mind having him at all if he comes cheap. Could use some attitude on this team.

I'm really curious about center. I like Bonino but no way at that price and term.

He scored 14 points in 67 games last year. I know offensive production isn't everything but he's not one of those type players that does other things like Fast. I just don't get how he helps.

Who is currently on your fourth line? Remember, Fast likely misses the first month of the season.

Glass is gone, inevitably they'll have to sign some player (likely on the cheap) who can bring some sandpaper grit to the room. Hartnell while certainly is no tough guy, he can be a POS out there but do it within the rules *(usually).

For sure he had a bad year, but both of the 2 years before he had .6 ppg. A ~35 points bottom6 player on the cheap that played well under AV 3 years ago... You don't get how that could help?

Rangers picked the wrong year to have all this cap space. I just really hope they have a plan and don't just spend it cause they have it. Most of these UFAs are going to get way more then they are worth

No, I think he kind of sucks now. I think we would be trying to recapture something that we had 3 years ago that doesn't exist anymore. But I ain't going to cry about it if he's signs for cheap either.

Hartnell would be nice on the 4th line. Pouliot as a 2nd option. Bonino is meh.
