It's always interesting to watch people make excuses for "missing the boat".
Methot is a beast. Will be missed on the Sens back end.
He was HUGE in the Sens series against the Pens. |

Let's just put it this way: a lot of GMs out there probably hate McPhee and he got blacklisted by a few of them.
How else can you explain this horrible return?

The Sens did the right thing. They are a budget team with Karlsson coming up in 2 years and he is going to get paid HUGE, even at a hometown discount.
They will also deal Phaneuf, although they may have to take salary back.

How else can you explain the horrible picks he made in some cases. He is trying to preserve relationships.

It's okay man. It sucks a bit but we need the money for next year.
I expect we start the year with something like:
Phaneuf - Karlsson
Claesson - Ceci
Harpur/Borowiecki - Wideman
During the season Chabot can move up if he is doing well in the AHL. I expect Phaneuf to play together with Karlsson so that his production and trade value will go up. Of course still very low but we need to move him at some point. |

McPhee was getting roasted by other gms! Saying he was using mob extortion tactics, and he obviously changed his tune! Hense the expansion draft picks that were chosen! And the Methot loss is a head scratcher! And who's available in your guys opinion would could be effective to replace his minutes to play with Karlsson? Anyone in house or is their a free agent that Dorion might have his eyes on? |

I think a guys like stone or polka would bring very similar styles and levels of play at a fraction of the cost |

Phaneuf, Karlsson and Ceci will log 22 to 28 minutes a night. Claesson will go to 18 to 20, he looked quite good last season and should be able to handle it. Rest is for Harpur/Borowiecki and Wideman. I hope we don't get a Dman in free agency. If Claesson cannot handle it we can make a trade or try out Chabot. |

Dion wont be a good fit with Karlsson. The only positive there would be that he is so slow that he will always be back on the play while Karlsson rushes. |

No surprise, many players get waived the first time
Free Agency
Wouldn't be surprised to see Kulikov signed by Ottawa. I think it's a shorter deal (not 5 years but who knows)
Trade
my prediction - if it a deal happens - Phaneuf gets dealt to LA Kings and the Sens. I suggested earlier a crazy but beneficial idea of moving Phaneuf and Ryan for gaborik, brown, and ONE of Martinez or Muzzin - then moving atleast brown to vegas with a pick... maybe even more to get a valuable piece on vegas |

Methot's contract is up after 2 years, which is when Karlsson needs to be extended, so I'm not sure what this does to help in that regard... they could have just let Methot walk in 2 years and got 2 more years of a solid D-man in his prime... |

All indications point out that Cleasson is a better fit with Karlsson than with Ceci. I think the coach will prefer balancing out the matchups to get a veteran on both pairings. I for one am hoping that Senators aquire Alzner from the free agency.
Alzner- Karlsson
Phaneuf- Ceci
Cleasson/ Boroweiki - Wideman/ Chabot (9 games trial)
That would make for a much better D overall and would allow the team to fully develop their younger defense.
My two cents.

But in the process they would have exposed another player, most likely Ceci, who I think will become a better D when he reaches his prime in 4-5 years down the road.

Alzner is going to get paid twice what he's worth......ill lose it if ottawa signs him. He's basically this season's orpik |

You may not be a fan, but there's no denying that he was our 2nd best defenseman... Ottawa has probably 8 "NHL" defenseman, but other than Karlsson and Phaneuf at this point, I would argue they are all 3rd pairing at best. Hopefully Chabot is ready to play, otherwise I expect next year might be a struggle |

Agreed, he'll make more than Methot for longer. All indications is Ottawa was looking to shed salary, so I would be very surprised if they sign any D in free agency... Any bargain bin options probably aren't as good as what they have internally (Claesson, Harpur, Chabot...)

What I keep hearing is that McPhee decided to (frank) the Senators because they refused to pay his ransom (prospect + 2018 1st).
By the time he realized the price was down on the wider market, he was locked in. Maybe he lowers the price on Methot for the Sens a bit (to just a 2018 1st or something), but since the Sens refuse to pay that inflated rate, he chooses to trade Methot to another team for a 2nd and 7th (effectively) and save a little face.
Richard move by McPhee, but sends the message that we should have paid the piper. Turns what could have been a win-win into a lose-lose (are you telling me McPhee wouldn't have rather had Wideman and/or Dzingel and a 2018 2nd than a 2017 7th and a 2018 2nd?) |
