See nothing but a win for the Coyotes here.
-traded a 7th overall in a weak draft
-traded a guy they acquired for a second round pick
-get a pretty damn good forward in Stepan
-get what could be an upgrade in goal over Smith... or at the very least a better Goalie than they were going to start the season with prior to the trade.
Rangers get cap space to sign Shatenkirk. I guess that is a win. |

Stepan has been very consistent with in point productions so it's hard for me to gauge how much his play has dropped off (if it has). If he holds up its a good add for AZ.
IF the Rangers land Shattenkirk with the cleared cap space then it will all be win. Right now it's pretty inconclusive. It might have bee better to trade Raanta separately, but who knows. |

Shattenkirk didn't look outstanding in the playoffs, IMHO.
Depending on the money he's looking for... could be a stiff price to pay for his services. |

probably the best two things the Rangers have going for themselves overall are Ryan McDonagh and Brady Skjei.
Both are left handed defensemen, both of them would be great partners for Shattenkirk who are responsible enough defensively to let Shattenkirk do his thing
maybe the NYR get lucky and it's his lousy playoffs that keeps his price a little lower |

Turned Ryan Haggerty along with a slow 2nd line Center into a 7th overall pick and an NHL ready 21 year old puck moving defenseman, no landslide for Arizona, sorry |

That's fair, but the guy has a long track record of putting up points. You want to question how good his defense is, that's fine. Just bout every player who makes it to free agency has a flaw.... even if that flaw is they want more money and term then they should get. In the end they all seem to be tradable assets so I'd take that chance.

Stepan was regarded, by i'd say 80% of this site, as "a good second line center that makes too much money"
until now |

I think this move was necessary. This core has not been able to win the big one and change was needed. Was Stepan the reason NYR didn't win the Cup? No. But you have to make tough calls sometimes and with Miller, Hayes, Skjei, and Zibby all needing to get paid the Rangers get to retool and to save up for the future. Zibby was on his way to Stepan numbers last season before the injury so he should be able to pick up the slack there. Rebuild the fourth line, rebuild the D. The team should be able to pick up where they left off in the next season or two and be better long term. |

I really think they unloaded Stepan's contract just in time, just like they did Scott Gomez |

I think Brassard for Zibinajed could be considered proactive too. |

Very much. Zibby would have been in the 50 point range if not for the injury. |

Agreed I think ziggy can be a 50pt guy no problem! But it's a strange move to me,i know they needed cap relief! But maybe getting a player who can help them now? take like what Edmonton did with the ebbs trade! They received a decent return ya, but didn't it create a couple of holes for a completing team?Maybe they'll be filled at free agency I guess? And from Arizona side, agree they had prospects to spare |

We'll never know what the other offers were. This may have been the best one. In the end, time will tell how it works out. |

This wasn't a weak draft... I think it's just as good as the 2014 one, just no high powered prospects like Laine, Matthews, and McDavid... |
