Bob Duff: Mrazek's stock plummets Not so long ago thought to be their goalie of the future, the Detroit Red Wings opted to leave Petr Mrazek unprotected in the NHL expansion draft.

Should've thought about not giving up future assets when you had the chance to pick 16th last year.

But all in all it seems like a weird move to me, but there must have been something going on internally between Mrazek and the team (next to him sucking this year)?

Holland has been bitter at Mrazek ever since last summer when he almost was taken to arbitration by him and was forced to give him a raise. Kenny had his media stool pigeon Helene St. James trash Mrazek all season. Jimmy Howard is Kenny's boy. He's likely still bitter that Babs kicked Jimmy to the curb before the 2015 playoffs to go with Mrazek. Bottom line here is that Kenny has planned this all along. Mrazek has struggled. No doubt. But to lose him for nothing? Inexcusable.

Yes, that will be terrible. And I think Vegas has no other option but to take him, not really any other enticing pieces from Detroit. And I was thinking Holland finally got it when he was hoarding all those 3rd rd picks, that it was going to be a rebuild... But with this move it looks like he wants to go for a quick retool and try again (and fail probably).

What if holland is actually so brilliant that he uses this expansion draft to get mrazek drafted and the new trades Howard, freeing up 9 million in salary and trade for a prospect top end goalie like ranta or grubhauer on the cheap as goalies will likely be traded all over the place shortly?

But who wants Howard with these goalies available? Getting Raanta or Grubauer back would be nice for sure. What are the odds though?

You're giving Holland too much credit. He can't think that far ahead. He's likely thinking if he can dump Mrazek's 4 million, he can waste it in UFA. I don't want Holland to have any Cap space. Last summer he signed a 32 year old Nielsen for 6 years, re-signed an injury prone Helm, 84 year old Steve Ott and Vanek. If Vegas takes Mrazek, who will Holland blame for missing the playoffs? He will need a new scapegoat. Howard will be injured by Christmas.

If he would of left Howard unprotected, he's probably not taken by Vegas so then it would probably be Ouellet. Maybe Holland is hoping Mrazek is taken so that Ouellet isn't.

Vegas can't take Mrazek, right? I think there are too many other good goalies available, and XO is a great depth option for their defense. Look at the defense available... they are going to get a lot of young guys with some upside, and XO will fit into that bunch perfectly. If Vegas is going to have a strong point, it will be that defense, and XO can fight to make their starting 6, or remain an option as he continues to develop.

I think Holland already knows that Mrazek isn't going to get selected, so he did this to send him a message in hopes that his (reported) attitude problems change.

Ken Holland can't get the boot fast enough. So sick of his incompetence, arrogance, and utter worthlessness in doing nothing short of destroying this franchise from within, with every solitary move & decision he makes.

This is the best decision Holland has made in the last 5 years. Get this piece of sh*t out of Detroit. We could only HOPE that Vegas takes him and his sh*tty attitude with him.

Right, a younger player who dares call out the ineptitude he sees on a daily basis every year, is the one with the problem, not Holland or Blashill.

Heaven forbid the obvious incompetence & mediocrity be called for what it is.

Vegas wont take Mrazek. He has 1 year left with that poor season. As a GM I would rather take a guy like Fleury who is guaranteed to be around for a few years and then I would grab Malcom Subban. Neuvirth would be another option as he has 2 years on his contract at a cheap price. Problem with him is his injury history. To me Mrazek is the pick that has the highest risk.

Trust me - I hear you. I am not saying that Holland and Blashill aren't problems in themselves. And I definitely appreciate a player that is willing to speak his mind when frustrated with the organization. But, I don't really think that is what Mrazek was doing. I think he is a cocky, sub average goalie - that thinks he is the best. It's not the attitude to have - especially as the team rebuilds with a younger group (hopefully!).

There's still safer options than Mrazek as a backup like Grubauer, Pickard, Raanta (Assuming Fleury is their #1 goalie)

I can agree with that. I'm not sure those guys will all be available though. They might take 1 or 2 goalies and then flip them to other teams.

There are better D options than XO and Mrazek is arguably the best goalie available.
