Jesus what the frank happen to this team? Management?and if so the current group or last? They had a good season and playoffs what 3 years ago?then what happened? I know that they have some great kids coming that didn't need protection, but the ones that got exposed picks is a good goaltender and had a great showing at the world's! So it would suck to lose him but are they losing anyone other than him that has any value? I really hope that sackic can get a haul for Duchene! When first mentioned he was on the block, the asking price I believe was a 1st round a A+dman prospect and a forward +they could take back a bit of a roster player salery? How about gally,a 1st,roster player, and julison (spelling) the dman prospect ? Its a lot but frank em! Bergys gone if they dont win the cup and i think he knows that price ain't signing back! Anyway I really hope this team can get its shat together and return to the great organization it once was not to long ago!best of luck at the draft and with the rest of the offseason ...long enough post? |

A bunch of everything. Over achieved and made the playoffs in the 1st year of Roy. They felt they were ready and started to add pieces, wasting picks on bad trades, trying to sign UFAs to help be the pieces to get them over the top, etc.
Really Roy/Sakic era bought into their own hype in year 1, set things back with questionable moves since when they came in they had no youth or farm system to even begin with.
At least now Sakic has slowly built a respect prospect pool and starting to transition into a young roster with better smaller moves brining in youth and speed. I feel better the direction of the team going fwd now vs a year or 2 ago. Work to still do but its going in the right direction in terms of development...not the on ice product, but that will come |

Why would you waste a spot to protect Varly, esp at $5.9 million/yr? |

Because he's the better goalie... there are way better goalies being exposed for Vegas to look at. |

I am so disappointed in the leadership of this team. I will state that losing Pickard or Grigorenko isn't a drastic loss but in my opinion this is just poor asset management. Protecting Comeau over Grigorenko simply doesn't make sense. Comeau is going into his last year of his contract and appears to be in a state of decline. The Avs wont be competing for the playoffs for another two years so why protect Comeau?
The goalie scenario simply doesn't make any sense to me. This isn't about who the best player is but rather a situation where Varlamov is coming off of double hip surgery, has played poorly and makes $5.9 million per year. I think it would have been worth the risk to expose him rather than Pickard. If we play this out and say Varlamov was selected, the Avs clear his salary off the books and in a year where they won't compete for the playoffs they will have time to find a long term replacement and Pickard can play in his place as the defacto number one goalie. Essentially what the Avs have done is serve up an experienced, inexpensive goalie and an experienced, inexpensive top 9 forward on a silver platter for the Knights.
I had such high hopes for Sakic and his team for this off-season. However, time and time again I have been disappointed by their thought process and choices. Adding Will Butcher, a high end college free agent like Spencer Foo, a better constructed protection list, making trades where they take on a bad contract to expand the talent they receive would all incrementally help the talent base of this team. Instead, this management team continues to plod along in a very conservative manner refusing to think outside the box or implement any bold moves. I hope the draft and potential Duchene/Barrie trades bring better results than what we have seen to date. |

Agreed regarding the goalies. To me Grigs is too inconsistent and hasn't proven he can play night in and night out. I would be very upset if Picks was taken. I think Vegas will probably take Barbeiro but as long as it's not him or Picks I'll be happy. |

I read on here last night, I think it was the Pittsburgh writer who did a mock of the expansion draft and he took Soderberg. That would be perfect if that happened but I can't see the Knights passing on the younger, cheaper talent.
I agree that Grigorenko is inconsistent but as I see the Avalanche rebuilding, some of the players will be long term assets while others are short term. If the depth of the Avalanche continues to improve and the Avs have control over someone like a Grigorenko they could flip him in the next couple of years for a mid-round pick or something similar. My view is try to maximize the value of your assets. As I said earlier while none of these players like a Grigorenko are going to be core cogs they do provide a value and if you draft well into the deeper rounds then flipping these players could lead to another younger useful asset. |

Besides being the better goalie, hes a fragile mental midget. Dont mess with his head. When Roy didnt reach out to him when he was quitting, it apparently messed with him.
They are hiring his goalie coach from the KHL apparently, so they believe in him that he will be back to begin Varly after finally getting his surgery he needed for 2 years, bringing in a full time coach.
If you go that effort, gotta protect him to keep his head right |

I think you might have to chill out a bit here, I agree with the comeau over grigs thing but who knows what the thought process was there. Take comeau off the board so they are forced to pick Soderberg? Expose grigs in an effort to save Barberio or Pickard without having to give them and side deals....Not sure what the logic was there, it simpley could be there are done with Grigs so if they going to lose him soderberg or colborne they really dont care.
It would suck to lose Pickard bc hes a good guy and a lovable character on this team but hes just an average back up. There are way better goalie options available in the draft than pickard so I would be shocked to see him go.
I cant say its been a disappointing offseason bc nothing has been done yet to an extent. Frustrating there hasnt been drastic changes yet but its middle of June...90% of the teams havent made moves yet so I wont fault sakic for that.
Im in the mind frame of lets just wait till July 4th to see how upset or happy we are about this offseason, it really hasnt started yet. This week will be a super telling tale of what to expect going fwd. Cant wait

no wonder he still lives a skid lifestyle, hes not even charging JB for his happy endings |

So far before knowing who Vegas would take from us I would give Sakic a "B to B+" for this offseason.
Things he did great:
He got rid of the assistant coaches.
He bought out Beauchemin and saved Andrighetto/Nieto
Not so much:
Left Picks exposed and protected Varly.

Yeah it doesn't look like they have been up to much so thats a fair letter grade....but they tried to get Dubas to joing the front office, know working on warren rychel
BSN guys think the assistants and goalie coaches have already been hired, just waiting to announce them after the draft.
I didnt like how they were unable to land any Euro or NCAA Free agent but apparently were in on the majority of them, just always missing out (cant really fault players for not wanting to sign with the last place team)
I think they have been up to a lot of things behind the scenes, just not being public about them, things will pick up soon |

Agreed. Sakic has been put under a microscope and he's been trying to do a lot behind the scenes to make the Avs better. The Butcher situation is a mess that he inherited; he had to tell him that he wanted to sign him after Roy told him that he didn't want to sign him at any point. He just got done purging the assistants. Thank God the Brad Stuart situation is behind us. Now he needs to maximize the return for Duchene. (as much as it pains me to admit and I think the team he will be dealt to will be NYI) The future up to this point looks better, we are all waiting to see what they do from here on out but I think he wants to do his very best because he loves this franchise and I trust most of his decisions. |

I think it was good asset management by sakic. If Vegas selects grigs they have to sign him. Sakics might already have a deal in place with him. Or the avs might be done with him and are moving on. By some reports, Vegas liked comeau, if they like someone why give him up for free. Protect him and get a pick back for him later or another player. Who cares what you get back, important thing is your getting an asset you want In return. If your going to get a higher return for comeau over grigs protect the greater assest. |
