I guess my biggest question is.. what makes you think these players that were passed on pan out and reach their potential under Cappy and friends?

i bet if you did the same for every team you would get the same results. after the top 10 its a crap shoot. i will even go as far as saying you can create a program for a computer to make the picks and the same results will happen. there are so many variables that goes into "Dwight king"playing for a cup team. was it his development in minors that was better or did he just happen to be the right player at the right time to get called up? all i'm saying is it isn't easy drafting

My biggest question revolves around Noel's methodology. "To be fair" he only looked at the players taken with the next three picks following the Islanders. Huh?? This makes no sense.

Let's use his opening example of Jake Guentzel. He points out that the Islanders had the pick just before the Penguins and used it on Taylor Cammarata. So what? Why is that any dumber than some team who selected someone 20-25 picks earlier who will never sniff the NHL???

Noel, if you cannot see the error of your ways, I'll bet Zack can explain it to you...

Noel, I feel your frustration and pain being an Islander fan and I'm sure this had a lot to do with you taking the time to research this and write a blog on it.
Fact of the matter is everyone is going to tell you that everyone misses on the draft blah blah blah but the organization is responsible to develop and nurture these assets into the players they thought they were drafting, and this is on the GM.
After 10 plus years of Snow at the helm and quite honestly a less than stellar performance and inconsistent growth of the team and its players you are correct and Garth Snow Strikes out more than he hits the ball and there is no reason this guy has his job still.

Nice job on the blog btw.

So, 7, you're saying that Garth deserves another contract extension?

Of course I can't wait to see the brilliant moves he has up his sleeve that the other GMs wouldn't / couldn't even begin to think of.

Can't wait to see how his "Friend" helps him out in the expansion draft

It's a great point Dan. Drafting these players is only step one.

Drafting these 18 year old kids is very difficult. It's the development and coaching you really have to hit on. Most teams will miss on drafting these players.

That depends on the draft year talent plus where you are in the draft line up imho, but I'm not going to argue that with you.

The one thing that I think we can agree on is Garth Snow has done what a back up goalie was expected to do as a GM and needs to go.

Hate to say it, but compare the results to say my Oilers, or the Canucks. Snow has actually done quite a decent job at the draft compared to many of his peers. Pulling 3 or 4 NHL caliber players out of a draft year is a fantastic result.

And that Reinhart trade was epic for Snow, one of the best robberies by a long shot. And to top it off, I suspect he is Vegas bound, after all we gave up to get him.

While Cammarata hasn't panned out (hell he's busting very hard about now), when drafted he was one of the most prolific USHL and Bantam players the US has produced.

For comparison, his draft years PPG was around the levels of Jaden Schwartz, Sonny Milano, Clayton Keller, Johnny Gaudreau and Kyle Okposo. At 16 he was behind basically the most elite to ever come out of the USHL, guys like Matthews, Eichel, Vanek and 2018's Svechnikov.

So to single him out as a poor pick is rather disingenuous.

But thats why your GM's have been fired. Not too bad a result for The Oilers this year though, eh?

Oh you mean cherry-picking mid-round picks that aren't going to pan out isn't a widely accepted practice?

Very fun article. Usually when you get to the mid rounds they are looking at a large pool of equal talent players and the pick may be influenced by many factors. Just imagine how much the fans loved Nino but they decided to take Skinner? Would we be eyeing Duchene as our second line center? For NYR fans they took McLLrath when Fowler went two picks later. BTW we took Beau by trading up the Oiler 2nd rd pick to get TAM pick which was a NYR pick originally.

Islanders are not the only ones who missed out on some of these players! but I do see what your saying, if only hindsight? But the islanders are only a few peices away imho and have some great pieces in the pipeline! So all is not lost, see what snow can do in this critical offseason, cause I'm sure if he can't get enough done he'll be on a very short leash?but he won't be the only g.m.best of luck going forward!

Every team misses but like the point u have mentioned is the team doesnt have either enough scouts or not that many reliable scouts. Besides a few gems, Snow I think has done a lousy drafting job, his strength has been negotiating contracts on RFA's but now.......

If you are expecting to get 4 roster players out of every draft you are delusional at best.
