That's the problem with chasing possible trends, if you're late to the party, you've already missed it and you're back to square-one trying to figure out your next rebuild.
very well said, TM tried to do it this way with the kings model. |

"The biggest problem we saw with the Sabres, as well as with the Buffalo Bills, the last two years involved coaches trying to fit the players to the system instead of the other way around. Both coaches are no longer with the club after only two seasons."
I don't think there's a coach in the NHL that is capable of doing what you suggest. They all are products of years and years of coaching styles and beliefs and excelling at it (which landed them in the NHL to begin with). The amount they are capable of changing is minimal. If it were as simple as that .............. coaches would never get fired...... they would just change their system.
The bottom line is you need good players and a coach that matches the roster. Just like how it doesn't work when the players can't adapt to a certain system ......... it's the same way with coaching.
We have a decent core of players in Buffalo ......... determine their strengths, hire a coach that matches that skill set, get rid of players that don't and draft other players that match your "system".

Pach for Sabres coach!
Good blog Pach. You make an interesting point about chasing trends. One trend I have noticed in these playoffs is that the refs are letting a lot of obstruction calls go unwhistled. Makes me think that the trend towards the boring/clutch and grab type hockey of the early late 80's/early 90's where guys like Dana (the human pylon) Murzyn "excelled" in the NHL. I hope the league doesn't regress back to that era. |

The problem is we don't have an identity, at all.
We aren't fast
We aren't physical
We aren't overly skilled
We aren't a great defensive team
Our former GM just didn't know how to build a team.

My best friend died 10 years ago, today at age 37. Jon was a huge Sabres fan I haven't played a single game of video hockey since 2007. Let's build a winning team, for God's sake...none of us are getting any younger! |

My concern is, is drafting of college players going to become a problem with them going to free agency instead of signing with the team that drafts them, We have Borgen and Fitzgerald as prospects, but can we sure that they will even sign here, That leaves us with limited CHL players that are prospects, Guhle, Martin, Stephens, Omanski, and the few already signed Nelson, Florentino and RFA Austin. Botterill has some work to do. |

The number of times a college FA signs with his drafted team still exceeds the number of times they leave. Still worth investing in. |

That's great if you know you're going to have that money on that date. But for people who aren't quite sure it's not ideal.

Yes, he had 3 drafts, but he was really only given 2 years to build the team. That's not a lot of time. |

i would accept this if he didnt come in and say he doesnt need a lot of time and proceed to sell assets like hotcakes to get players he personally wanted. |

That's all fine and good when you have a complete team to start with, then it's ok to gamble on a defenseman late in the 1st, because (frank) it, you already have Perry, Getzlaf, Kesler, Rakell, Fowler, Vatanen and Lindholm. But if you're just trying to fill out a team that has holes everywhere the year or 2 after trading away a player if he strung together 3 good games then it becomes much harder to potentially throw picks away on a defenseman that might make your team in 4 years. |

I get that, but he said that with everyone knowing we were tanking for 2 years. So realistically you were expecting a 1 year rebuild? |

No, he apparently was. If he comes in here and preaches patience, lowers expectations and collects/develops young talent his firing would be well unjustified.
He came and blew a ton on players he believed could instantly turn this team around. And put together a hilariously bad defence. |
